History of the Internet

  • ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency)

ARPA goes online in December and connects four major U.S universities. This is important since it is featured by a major company of some sort which helped to develop the 'internet'.
  • The first person to use the internet.

The first person to use the internet was Charley Kline at UCLA who tried to connect to Stanford research institute, the system crashed as it reached the letter 'G' of the word 'LOGIN'.This is important since it shows that a lot of trial and error is used to develop/succeed at something.
  • Bill Gates

The software Bill Gates invented, is/was used to run the computers and without it wouldn't be the computers we know today. This is important since it's a majorly relevant piece of information to the basics of what the internet uses.
  • Electronic mail, Ray Tomlinson

Electronic mail was introduced and the '@' symbol was used to distinguish between the user/sender's name and the network name. This is important since it shows why the '@' symbol was created and used in emails, something that people may overlook.
  • 'Internet'

The word 'Internet' is use for the first time.
This is important since it shows how the 'internet' we used today, and overlook, has developed from something that wasn't even classed as internet many years ago.
  • Commodore SX-64

It was a 'luggage' version of the Commodore 64 home computer and was introduced in January, 1983 and was released a year later.
  • DNS

Domain name system, (DNS) is used, like .com, .org.
This is important since it's a key thing still used in network addresses now, so it shows that things may develop but development doesn't mean to change everything, it's to improve.
  • 'Internet worm'

A virus called the 'Internet worm' temporarily shutdowns 10% of the world's internet servers. This is important because it shows how small things could affect the internet easily.
