    AOL Inc. or American Online was one of the early pioneers of the Internet in the mid-1990s. It was a dial-up service with a web portal, e-mail, instant messaging and, a web browser. AOL was founded by Bill von Meister and started out as GameLine, which was a service that hooked your Atari 2600 to your phone line to rent games for $1.

Six Degrees was regarded as one of the first social media sites created based on the theory that every person in the world could be connected to each other by just six degrees of separation, The 'Six Degrees of Separation' Theory. Created by Andrew Weinreich. Six Degrees allowed users to create a profile and friend other users.

    Founded by Jonathan Abrams, Friendster was a social gaming site. Before it was redesigned, Friendster was originally a social networking service that allowed users to contact other members, maintain those contacts, and share online content and media with those contacts. It was also used for dating and discovering new events, bands and hobbies. Friendster was known as the grandfather of social networking sites.

    Linked In is a business and employment-oriented social networking service. Linked In was founded by Reid Hoffman. It is mainly used for professional networking and allows employers to post job offers. High school students have also used Linked In to add profiles to college applications. The site uses a "gated-access approach," where contact with any professional requires either an existing relationship to provide trust among members.

    After the launch of the social media outlet Friendster, employees of eUniverse saw potential for a new networking system. My Space was created in August 2003 and overseen by Brad Greenspan. MySpace allowed its users to interact with a network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music, and videos. In July 2006, MySpace was the most visited website in The United States.

    Founded by Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook is an American for-profit corporation and social networking site that makes it easy for you to connect and share with your family and friends online. Membership for Facebook was initially limited to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy Leagues, and eventually everyone with a valid email address. Users can post, share, sell items, connect, and message other users.

    Reddit is an American social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Reddit was founded by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian. Users can vote submissions up or down that determines their position on the page.

    Twitter
    Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey. Dorsey had originally imagined Twitter as an SMS-based communications platform. Twitter is an online news and social networking service where users post and interact with messages or "tweets." Users can now tweet pictures, videos, interact with other users, and post within a 140 character limit.

    Tumblr
    Founded by David Karp, Tumblr is a microblogging and social networking website. The site allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog. Tumblr allows its users to comment on their own or other user's blog posts. Tags are added to a blog post to help users search for specific topics.
  • Pinterest

    Pinterest
    Founded by Ben Silbermann, Pinterest is a online pinboard for collecting visual pieces of multimedia. Users can upload, save, sort, and manage images, known as pins, through collections known as pinboards. It also allows businesses to create pages aimed at promoting their companies online.
  • Instagram

    Instagram is an app that allows users to share pictures and videos either publicly or privately. Instagram was founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Users can upload pictures and videos with the option to add filters to their posts and connect their other social media outlets to share their content to other profiles.
  • Snapchat

    Snapchat
    Created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown, Snapchat is an image messaging and multimedia mobile app. Snapchat started out as an app called Picaboo but, then was relaunched as Snapchat after removing creator Reggie Brown from the group. Snapchat started off as a photo sharing and evolved to include messaging, videos, and video calls. It was a one-on-one application that eventually changed to allow users to share photos and videos with all of their connected users through story mode.
