The Thirteenth Amendment
The 13th amendment was passed by congress on January 31, 1865 and was ratified by congress on December 6, 1865. The thirteenth amendment abolished slavery in the United States. -
National Labor Union
This was the first national labor federation of the United States. It was created in 1866 and dissolved in 1873. Pave the way for the Knights of Labor. -
Knights of Labor
The Knights of Labor was one of the largest and most important labor organizations of the 1880s. It's most important leader was Terence V. Powderly. -
First Labor Day
September 5th was considered the workers day parade. People would gather and march instead of being paid for that day. Oregon was the first state to legalize labor day holiday. President at the time signed a bill to make labor day a federal holiday. -
Haymarket Riot
Also known as the Haymarket Affair or Massacre, was the aftermath of a bombing that took place at a labor demonstration. This occurred at Haymarket Square in Chicago. -
Homestead Strike
Also known as the Homestead Steel Strike or Homestead massacre, was an industrial lockout and strike. Occurred between strikers and private agents. -
Wagner Act
This bill was signed into law by President Franklin Roosevelt. It established the National Labor Relations Board. -
Fair Labor Standards Act
This law established a minimum wage. overtime pay, recordkeeping, and youth employment standards. Minimum wage in now ten dollars an hour. -
Taft-Hartley Act
This was also known as The Labor Management Relations Act of 1947. This law established restrictions and boundaries on labor unions and their power. -
Steel Strike 1959
Workers of the steel industry went on strike against the major U.S steel producers. This strike lasted for one hundred and sixteen days.
