History of Immigration in Canada

  • Chinese Head Tax

    A head tax was put on all chinese immagrants to deture them from emigrating to Canada.
  • Komagata Maru Incident

    Indians could immigrate to Canada but they had to come directly from India. Because of this in 1914 a Japanese ship carrying a load of Indians was denied entry into Canada.
  • Internment of Ukrainian Canadians

    In WW1 Ukrainian and German Canadians were put in internment camps due to suspicion in world war one.
  • Internment of Japanese Canadians

    Canadas government moved all poeple of Japanese decent away from the west coast and some were put into prisner camps due to the War Measures Act.
  • Internment of Italian Canadians

    During WW2 Canada used the War Measure Act to arrest Italian Canadians and put them in prisner camps.
  • Creation of Immigration Categories

    This is a by product of the Immigration act and added categories that helped different people in different senorios then other people come to canada. For example if your an economic immigrant you need to get 67 pointsin the point system but if your a refugee then you don't need to.
  • Immigration Act

    The Immigration Act clearly outlined the fundamental objectives of the Canadian immigration policy. It also should the mandatory resposiblity of the government to plan for the future of immigration and the immigration act defined refugees as a distinct class og immigrant.
  • Singh Decision

    Satnam Singh was rejected entry to canada under the immigration act. The sepreme court said that this violated section 7 of the charter of rigjts and freedoms which states: Everyone has the right life, liberty, and security of the person, and theright to not be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.
  • Apology for The Internment of Japanese Canadians

    The Canadian government made a formal apology for the crual actions that took place.
  • Apology for The Internment of Italian Canadians

    The Canadian government made a formal apology for the things that happened.
  • Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

    This provided some objectives for immigration. Some of those objectives were:
    - To reunite families in Canada
    - Respect the bilingual and multicultural character of Canada
    - Support the development of immigration and support a prosperous economy across all regions.
  • Refugees being added as an immigration catagory

    Refugees were added into the class system to greater help people in poor war torn countries
  • Apology for the Chinese Head Tax

    The Chinese Canadians got a formal apology from the Canadian Government.
