inventions

1880

people began working on creating moving pictures and various motion picture cameras. this began with a bet on a horse. multiple cameras were lined up as a horse ran across and they each Tok a single picture.

first public display

1890

first public showing of films, first theater built in 1899. before this there were only stations where one person could watch. this was preferred by the people.

first studios

1900

film studios beginning to be built. first narrative film produced - the great train robbery (1903). the great train robbery lasted 12 minutes instead of the usual 30 seconds.

star system

1910

Laemmle introduced first star system. this caused the rise of the American movie star phenomenon. people began to recognize actors and actresses.

color

1920

Two color technology became available. it was rarely used and black & white was standard.

technicolor

1930

people could now see film in Technicolor. Opposed to two color or black and white. two color was rarely used so theaters went from black & white to technicolor.

McCarthyism

1940

hollywood was threatened by communism accusations. the Hollywood ten refused this. Hollywood ten went to jail for contempt of court.

upgrade

1950

film is on a rise and becoming more popular. the wide screen is invented for bigger audiences. this made it easier to have more people in a theater.

rated

1960

motion pictures start to be rated. first ratings were g, pg, and r. pg-13 and x came later.

steady cam

1970

steady cam became available. first used in rocky. made films less rocky and easier to make.

big time movies

1980

movies are making a big break and becoming bigger than ever. movies like star wars and Saturday night fever enter the theaters. new refreshing movies like this brought in new customers.

titanic

1990

titanic enters theaters. most expensive film of all time, costing between $250 and $300 million to produced market. becomes highest grossing film.
