    During the Middle Ages, the Christian Church began to grow. This caused people with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities to Satan's servants. Many people were tortured and killed. In the late Middle Ages, Islamic Rulers began to build asylums
  • 1300

    Renaissance (1300-1600)

    During the Renaissance, many people with emotional and behavior disabilities were kept in asylums. They were kept in dark cells, wearing straitjackets, and were usually tested on. Some people would even pay to observe the people or children as if they were on display. Some thinkers during this time believed that the causes for the behaviors were biological, but it didn't help with the treatment of people.
  • Moral Treatment

    After Philippe Pinel was appointed head of the Bicetre Hospital, people around the world began to treat patients in the asylums with kindness and respect. This started to spread around the world as Moral Treatment.
  • The Retreat at York is built.

    William Tuke builds the York Retreat to house people with mental and behavioral disabilities.
  • Dorothea Dix

    Many people with emotional and behavioral disabilities could not afford the hospital, so Dorothea Dix started advocating publicly funded institutions. With her help, thirty new facilities were open.
  • Juvenal Psychopathic Institute

    The first Juvenal psychopathic was established by William Healy, Agusta Bronner, Grace Fernald, and Julie Lathrop.
  • Milieu therapy

    These is a type of therapy that puts patients, typically children and teens, into groups and stay together for months. Patients are taught to learn how to take responsibility for their own actions.
  • Mental Health Act

    President Harry Truman signs the Mental Health Act that implements research of mental health
  • Engineered Classroom

    Frank Hewett created the Engineered Classroom, which is reward system. When the student behaves they get tokens and that leads to possible prizes.
  • Project Re-ED

    This project was made to find ways to teach students with emotional and behavioral disabilities in the classroom.
  • Council for Children with Behavior Disorders

    A new Council for Children with Behavior Disorders forms
  • Mills vs. The Board of Education

    A court case about a child that was expelled from school, because he had behavioral issues.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    This act allowed all students to have access to public education.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA)

    IDEA replaced the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. This allowed students to have accommodations in the classroom.
