History of Coming of Age Films

  • The Goonies

The Goonies is an adventure, family film, which is all about a group of young boys who stumble on a treasure map and decide to pursue it trying to find “free willy”. However the innocent trip becomes risky when a group of grown men decide to look for the treasure too. It then becomes more exciting as they are battling against each other. I like this film, as it is very funny and entertaining. This film was made for when children started joining their parents in watching films.
  • Dirty Dancing

Dirty dancing is a romantic film about a young woman called baby, who goes on holiday with her family. Baby becomes a great dancer. She falls in love, not only with the new dancing style but her suborn, strict dancing partner too. The two of them reluctantly work together and eventually fall in love. At this date, the technology used would have been fantastic and very amusing but for us today it seems very dated, however this is one of my favorite romances as it has a unique storyline.
  • Forrest Gump

This film is about a man sat at a bench by a bus stop telling strangers about his life, his childhood how he struggled, his teen years how he dealt with girlfriends and is life in general. This is one of my all time favorite films as it has an extremely different way of telling its storlyine.
  • Toy Story

Toy Story is one of the classic pixar movies. This is about a good hearted cowboy toy called Woody and his owner Andy gets a new toy called Buzz, he begins to feel left out but then Andy and Buzz are left on a mission to try and get home. This is a very beautifully written film, for children and even adults
  • Bend it like Beckham

This film is about a girl called Jess living with her very strict Indian family, she has a strong passion for football but her family will never allow it. She constantly has to balance out this double life. I love this film so much as we learn about another culture whilst also seeing the difficulties she goes through.
  • Spiderman

Spiderman is a film about A nerdy, unpopular teenager who gets bit by a spider, which changes his genes so he has characteristics like a spider. By day Peter is still ordinary, but when the city is in need he becomes a loved hero. Peter also discovers that his new identity makes him more confident with the girl he likes. I like how this film is thought out as it is quite unique giving an insight on double lives.
  • Mean Girls

This is one of my main favorite films as it is perfect for any teenage girl that is going through secondary school, it is very well thought out because it shows different types of personalities you'd find in a school. It is about a girl moving from South Africa to america and starting school, she struggles to fit in and the 'popular girls' known as the Plastics introduce her to everything. She realizes this isn't the type of friends she needs in her life as they cause a lot of drama.
  • Juno

This film is about a young girl that realizes she is pregnant with her high school boyfriend. She is in shock as she's too young and also still in school. Throughout this film it teaches a lesson about responsibility. Juno matures through the story and it gives us an insight about how common unexpected teenage pregnancies are and how much it can impact your life.
  • Angus, Thongs and Perfect snogging

This film is about the life of a teenage girl called Gerogia. It gives a story of a typical teenage girls life, with her friends and boy troubles. I enjoyed this film due to the fact i think any teen would relate to this. The film is not perfect and this symbolizes her life which I think is very creative.
  • The Karate Kid

This film is about a mother and son that have to move to china and start a new life there due to the mothers job. The son meets Jackie Chan and learns a lot of different lessons from him, both about karate and about life. This is a very touching film as it teaches everyone to start working for what you want to achieve.
  • 22 Jump Street

This film is about 2 men that have an undercover job of having to be spies and solve drug issues. This time the mission is at a college and they will have to act as teenagers to fit in and find information about a drug usage and a death of a girl. This film is very funny but also teaches us a lesson to not accept everything given to you.
