History of Coming of Age Films

  • Grease

This rom-com musical film begins with two teenagers falling in love over the summer then meeting again in high school and trying to make it work with all the complications of school and friendship. The film has always been very popular with the teenage audience as it follows the lives of a group of teenagers but set in the 50's .
  • The Breakfast Club

Directed by John Hughes, the Breakfast Club is a movie about 5 high school teenagers who meet in detention on a Saturday. The characters include, the criminal (Judd Nelson), the princess (Molly Ringwald), the athlete (Emilio Estevez), the brain (Anthony Michael Hall), the basket case (Ally Sheedy). This film is one of the most famous coming of age films. The target audience is teenagers and everyone can relate to at least one character in the movie as they are all so different.
  • Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Ferris Bueller has a skill at cutting classes and getting away with it. Intending to make one last day of it before graduation, Ferris
embarks on a one-day journey through the streets of Chicago. However, Ferris' principle is determined to catch him in the act. it was funny and interesting to watch. The target audience is probably teenagers because of the theme of the film.
  • Mean Girls

Staring Lindsey Lohan as Cady Heron and directed by Mark Waters, Mean Girls is one of the most popular chick flicks ever. The film is about teenage girls at high school and the different cliques and stereotypes there are. The film is easy for teenagers to relate to and teaches that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, this is why I think the target audience is teenagers.
  • Superbad

High-school seniors Seth and Evan have high hopes for a graduation party. The teens plan to drink and get girls so they can become part of the in-crowd, this however doesn't entirely work out and a series of unfortunate events follow. This film is aimed towards late teens or early adults because of its comical jokes and subject.
  • Juno

When teen Juno MacGuff becomes pregnant, she chooses a failed rock star and his wife to adopt her unborn child. The film follows her journey through pregnancy and birth and the events in between. This film is targeted towards late teens/young adults as it is based around having a child in school and the consequences of it.
  • Wild Child

Wild Child is a romantic comedy about Poppy Moor, a troublesome teenage living in America, who’s Dad has had enough of her bad behaviour and sends her to boarding school in England where she eventually finds who she really is. The target audience for this film is teenagers, it tells the story of a girl who doesn't really know where she fits in which I think is relatable to many young teens.
  • Easy A

Prompted by her popular best friend to spill details of her boring weekend, Olive, a clean-cut teen, decides to tell a lie about losing her virginity. The high-school busybody overhears the conversation and spreads it all over campus. I would say the target audience for this movie is late teens, this is because of the topics discussed and the theme of the film. Also the movie is set around high school students, which implies these are the type of people who would be interested in the film.
  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Directed by Stephen Chbosky this drama/romance follows the story of a socially awkward freshman Charlie, who befriends two charismatic seniors who help him discover friendship, love, music etc. Due to the themes of this movie and what is discussed, I would say this film is targeted towards late teens and early adults. I loved watching this film, I found it very humorous and entertaining.
