  • The Wilmot Proviso (red)

    Designed to eliminate slavery in the land acquired during the Mexican War. Made the supporters of slavery mad.

    Decided between free and slave states. Regarded the territories acquired during the Mexican-American War. California is made a free state. This over turned the Missouri Compromise. It decreased tension because it was a compromise.

    A law forcing all US citizens to return runaway enslaved Africans, regardless of the legality of slavery in their state. It was part of the Compromise of 1850. It decreased tension because it was a compromise.

    A network of secret routes that were used to free slaves. The slaves were escaping to free states and Canada. Increased tensions because slave owners were losing slaves.

    John Brown attempted to initiate an armed slave revolt. He tried to take over a US arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. Increased tension because slaves were revolting against their owners.

    Abraham Lincoln won this election against Breckenridge. This angered the South because they would have to secede because he was going to ban slavery.
