    Christopher Columbus sailed out of the Spanish port of Palos with his three ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria in search of riches. The voyage was long and his crew was apprehensive to the point of near mutiny. When they finally arrived, thinking it was the Indies (Asia), he dubbed the natives "Indians".

    The American Revolutionary war began in 1775 due to conflicts between the colonies and Great Britain. Eventually, the colonies decided they wanted to be fully independent from Britain and a war broke out. With France's help, the colonies won the war and took a great step towards independence.

  • The Alamo

    The Alamo
    In 1835, Texas fought for it's independence from Mexico. During the war, a group of Texan soldiers occupied the Alamo which was a former Franciscan mission. In February of 1836, a mexican force sieged the fort and although vastly outnumbered, the Alamo's 200 defenders battled for 13 days before being overpowered.

    The American Civil War began in 1861 to determine whether or not the Confederacy would secede from country or the Union would survive. Conflicts concerning state versus federal authority such as slavery and western expansion pushed the country into war. After four years of fighting, the Union won what was the costliest war ever fought on American soil.

  • Great Depression

    From 1929 until about 1939, the industrialized Western world endured the most severe depression they had ever experienced. This economic slump caused by the stock market crash was known as the Great Depression. Though President Roosevelt put reform measures into place to help lessen the worst effects of the depression, WWII jump started the American industry, pulling the country out of the economic downturn.

    The second world war involved around 61 countries, including the world's superpowers. Most of the conflict broke out because of the persecution caused by Hitler and Nazi Germany. This is known as the most destructive war in all of history. The war lasted 6 years, but the United States was involved from 1941 to 1945.

    The Vietnam War was fought from 1955-1973 between North and South Vietnam.The North Vietnamese government and the Viet Cong were fighting to reunify Vietnam under communist rule.The United States was the principal ally of South Vietnam during the war.
  • John F. Kennedy

    John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, was assassinated on November 22, 1963. He was killed sitting next to his wife in a procession of cars during a parade. It was assumed he was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald, but we can't know for sure because Jack Ruby killed Oswald two days later.

    Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that carried Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong into space. On July 21, 1969, Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. They spent about two and a half hours on the surface, collecting 47.5 pounds of lunar material to return to Earth.

    Terrorist groups flew commercial planes into the Twin Towers, collapsing both and causing mass destruction.
  • Osama bin Laden

    Osama bin Laden
    Osama Bin Laden was the founder and leader of the militant organization, al-Qaeda. He was assassinated on May 2, 2011 by a team of Navy SEALs. The SEALs left behind as many survivors as possible - 3 women and 13 children.

    The Korean war was a conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea. This divided the country into North and South Korea with the former being Communist. The United States allied with South Korea and attempted to form some sort of diplomatic relationship with North Korea.
