    Jamestown: First Permanent British Colony
    Jamestown was established in 1607. Settlers came for a large variety of reasons. One reason was the cheap land.

    During this time period, the Virginia settlement struggled the most. 5/6th of the settlers died, the conditions were unhealthy, and they had bad relations with the Indians.

    Slave Society Development

    During this time period, slave society begins to really develop. People begin to purchase slaves over indentured servants as it avoided social unrest and was a more permanent labor force.
  • JQA is born.

    JQA is born.
    On July 11th, 1767, John Quincy Adams was born. He was born in a town called Braintree in Massachusetts. He was his mothers second child and was named after "the infants father and maternal grandmother." (Unger 10).
  • World's First Anti-Slavery Society

    Quakers in Philadelphia establish world’s first anti-slavery society
  • JQA and Father go to France

    Despite what he wanted for his family, John Adams had to travel to France. He determined JQA should travel with him. In France, JQA went to school and quickly picked up the language.

    This event demonstrates a weakness of Articles of Confederation, Excess of democracy, and Lack of Virtue
  • French Revolution Begins

    French Revolution Begins
    The French Revolution began in 1787. Due to the French being key supporters in the American Revolution, many felt Americans should assist the French. However George Washington did not believe so as he felt America was a new and weak nation.
  • Constitutional Convention

    Constitutional Convention
    The constitutional convention took place 1787. There were 55 Delegates who could be described as wealthy, young and mostly nationalists. James MacGregor called them “well-bred, well fed, well read, and the well wed”.
  • The Bank of the United States

    The Bank of the United States
    The Bank of the United States (BUS) was created. It was based in Philadelphia. People debated whether a national bank was constitutional or not.
  • Whiskey Rebellion

    Whiskey Rebellion
    The Whiskey Rebellion was a revolt of people who did not like the taxes. However, it was taxation WITH representation and therefore a fair tax. George Washington sent in the troops and demonstrated the strength of the Federal Government.
  • JQA Appointed US Minister

    George Washington appoints JQA as US minister to Holland. He beleived JQA was perfect for the job as it placed him in an area where diplomates spoke, perfect for JQA as believed by George Washington because of JQA credentials.
  • JQA Elected to State Senate

    JQA wins the election to the state senate. He ran on the Federalist Ticket.

    Napoleon becomes Emperor of France
  • JQA Appointed Minister to Russia

    JQA Appointed Minister to Russia
    The President asked JQA to be Minister to Russia and requested a quick reply. JQA accepted without telling his wife. She was not happy and he decided to write to her (Unger 146) IMAGE IS QUOTE

    Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821. This was after a 20 year war.
  • Congress turns to JQA for Help

    In December when Congress reconvened, elections had divided the house evenly. Unable to get anything done, they turned to JQA as he was the one man everyone trusted.

    During this time period, 1 million people died because of the potato famine.
  • JQA Suffers Stroke but Recovers

    While visiting his son in Boston, JQA suffered a stroke. It left him speechless with his right side paralyzed. With little hope it seemed he was close to death. However, by December he had regained his speech and memory was was recovering greatly.
  • JAQ Dies

    JAQ Dies
    JQA passes away in the House. Collapsing, a fellow congressman catches him. He is moved to another room where he is able to catch his breath and thank those around him. His last words were: "This is the end of earth, but I am composed." (Unger 308).

    The Civil war begins. Confederates attack Fort Sumter forcing the Union troops to leave.
