    JQA gets an important job
    John Quincy Adams traveled to St. Petersburg as secretary
    and translator for Francis Dana. Francis Dana served as American minister to the Russian Empire. 1781-1783. "...mid summer journey from Holland to St. Petersburg..and provided an amiable companion for Francis Dana..was twenty-four years older than his "secretary"" (Unger).

    JQA returns to America and starts college at Harvard College. Graduates in 1787.
  • Law

    Between 1787-1790 he studies law. Starting in 1791, he practices law in Boston.
  • JQA switches allegiance

    Between 1804 and 1808, a lot happens for JQA. He abandons the Federalist Party, votes as independent representative of the whole nation, votes for the Louisiana Purchase, and is forced to resign from Senate.

    JQA is appointed secretary of state by President James Monroe.
  • Missouri Compromise

    JQA is elected by the House of Representatives as the sixth President of the United States. Henry Clay shifted the votes and is named secretary of state. "John Quincy said he had accepted this appointment "for the good of my country"-not for the good of his career" (Unger).
  • Slavery changes

    The British Empire abolishes slavery. This is a big step that leads others to do the same.
  • Death

    JQA suffered a stroke in 1846 and was on the road to recovery. He never fully recovered and died on 2/23/1848. "Eighty-year-old John Quincy lay in a coma for the next two days, and at 7:20 p.m., on February 23, 1848, he died in the capitol he adored" (Unger).
  • Civil War

    Civil war starts between the North and the South. It is fought over the issue of slavery expanding into the western territories/states. Confederates attack Ft. Sumter in Charleston, S.C., marking the start of the war.
