  • Industrial Revolution 1760 - 1820

    People stop having to do things by hand and they got machines to do it for them.
  • Many people moved to the city.

    They moved because the population was growing and there were not enough jobs in the country and people needed jobs. The people thought there would be more jobs in the city and they also thought that the houses would be better in the city.
  • American War of Independence

    American War of Independence
    It was a war between the Americans and the British which led to the Americans making their own country and Britain was no longer a part of the new United States of America. So the British could no longer send the convicts to America.
  • British cities became overcrowded.

    There were too many people in Britain and not enough jobs so they lost their jobs, and they had no money so had to steal and they became convicts.
    Many people got sick and passed away.
  • The first fleet arrived in Australia.

    The first fleet arrived in Australia.
    The British brought the first fleet to Australia because they could no longer send convicts to America. They needed to send their convicts to somewhere else because their prisons had too many convicts.
    Britain also wanted to settle in Australia, because they would have more power by being able to trade with the Asians.
    The first contact with Aborigines occurred.
    The first fleet was led by Captain Arthur Phillip.
  • SmallPox

    Smallpox sweeps through the Aboriginal people of Sydney, killing most of them with in three years of the British arriving.
    There were now less Aboriginals in Australia and the Europeans had taken over.
  • Bennelong and Colebee (Aboriginals) were captured.

    Bennelong and Colebee (Aboriginals) were captured.
    Colebee escaped. Bennelong and Phillip became friends.
    Bennelong was one of the most significant and important Aboriginals in early Australia.
  • The Second Fleet from England arrived in Sydney Cove

    The Second Fleet from England arrived in Sydney Cove
    There were six ships in the second fleet. Three brought more convicts and they were mostly men, one brought women and the other two were for supplies.
  • The third fleet arrived in Sydney Cove.

    The third fleet had eleven ships and carried convicts, army people and supplies.
  • Settlements in Australia spread out to different areas

    All the fleet set out to different areas in Australia. Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth crossed the Blue Mountains and headed west.
  • GOLD RUSH

    GOLD RUSH
    Edward Hargraves found gold near Bathurst, so many more people started to dig for gold. This started the 'Gold Rush'.
