    On the 18th of January 1788, the first fleet witch was 11 ships reached Botany Bay. There were 1, 530 people all up on the boats. 136 of them were convicts and the rest free settlers.

    Governor Philips men captured Bennelong and kept him in shackles in the settlement for the first few months. Bennelong was finally let go but chose to stay to teach Governor Philip the language that the Wangal people spoke.
