    The Hatchet is gifted
    This scene arrives as a flashback on page 8 when Brian is soaring in the small bush plane. He flashbacks to a scene where his mother is giving him the hatchet. Brian thinks its strange and a weird gift but takes it anyway because he feels bad for giving his mother the cold shoulder due to the secret. This changes Brian by helping him to believe that sometimes good people like his mother do bad things like "the secret". Brian still knows though that he will never fully forgive his mother.

    Brian's Plane Crashes

    Brian's Plane Crashes
    On page 23 Brian's plane crashes into an L shaped lake deep in the Canadian Wilderness. This occurs because the pilot driving the small bush plane had a sudden and unexpected heart attack. There plane viciously slams into the water but Brian used his smarts to stay alive. Brian Is horrified by the close encounter with death and is brutally beaten by it. The crash changes Brian by making him pity himself over and over again which causes him to fall into a short depression, changed.

    Brian Gets Motivated by Perpich.
    On page 43 Brian remembers his old teacher named Perpich who was always telling him to look on the bright side, to get motivated, and that you are your best asset. Brian reflects on what he had told him and says to himself that he needs to do just that! Brian continued to try to look on the bright side throughout the course of the book and managed to change the way that he thought. Some may argue that Perpich was one of the reasons that Brian made it out of the woods.

    Brian Discovers His New Home

    Brian Discovers His New Home
    On page 53 Brian concluded that it was time for him to construct a shelter. Fortunately he discovered a small cave with a light overhang and a small sandy beach. Brian was ecstatic with his discovery and after a towering few days finally felt at peace and tranquil knowing that he finally had a place that he could stay to shelter him from the dangers he may face in the woods.

    First Food

    First Food
    On page 59 Brian Discovered a plump bush packed full of berries. The berries tasted incredibly bitter and later made him sick so he titled them "gut cherries", even though they are actually termed choke cherries. These horrible berries made him incredibly ill but still played a vast role in the book because it was the first food. I believe that finding the berries gave him the confidence to keep going and keep trying his finest to stay alive. These berries also gave him the strength to do more.

    The Bear Encounter

    The Bear Encounter
    On page 70 Brian runs into the bear. After Brian's frightening run in with the gut cherries he decided that it was time to find better food. He found a gorgeous bush with a handsome amount of raspberry's. When Brian was picking the berries he ran into a gigantic ferocious black bear. Brian was terrified and ran for his life. Luckily Brian wasn't harmed. This encounter taught Brian that you can never be to careful. Brian used this lesson throughout the rest of the book.

    On page 75 Brian is peacefully sleeping when he hears a noise scattering into his cave. Brian was terror-stricken screaming when he is stung by the porcupines quills in his leg. After the porcupine leave's Brian balls his eyes out all night when he realizes that nothing has changed and he was still stuck in the middle of the wilderness and he was still hurting. Brian learned that crying and feeling sorry for yourself solves nothing. This is a lesson Brian try's to apply the rest of the book.

    Fire!
    On page 86 after a long and hard battle Brian finally creates fire. Brian finally makes fire by using his smarts and swinging his hatchet against the wall of his cave to create sparks. Brian feeds the fire dead pine branches and is so overjoyed by his accomplishment that he calls the fire his friend. This is important to the book because its a big accomplishment for Brian and it tells us how he stayed safe, warm, and protected.

    On page 91 Brian gets the idea to build a signal fire to alert passing planes that he is there. When Brian is warming himself by the fire he gets the idea to build the fire. Brian is thrilled when he remembers that now that he has fire he can signal people. This scene gives Brian hope for the future and makes him think that he will one day be rescued.

    On page 94 Brian hears a slithering in the sand outside his rock cave. Brian was horrified thinking the porcupine had come back but it turns out it was just a turtle. In the morning Brian goes out side to see what is there when he discovers a small mound with a little hole. Brian digs up the hole and finds 29 turtle eggs. At first Brian is hesitant to eat the eggs but ends up eating a few anyway. The eggs changed Brian by giving him an amazing source of protein and again giving him hope.

    The Plane Fly's Over
    On page 109 Brian is searching for wood when he hears a noise. At first the noise sounds like a buzzing but gradually gets louder and Brian knows exactly what it is. Its a plane. Brian sprints to his campsite and viciously rips into the cave and attempts to make a fire on the big rock. But he's too late the plane doesn't see him. Brian falls into a depression and says to himself "this is just a game". This experience is heartbreaking for Brian and makes him lose every bit the hope he had left.

    On page 116 Brian is done with life. After the plane had flown over without seeing him Brian fell into a deep dark mental pit that he couldn't escape until finally he decides that he is finished. He is finished with being in the wilderness and is finished with life. He goes up on a big rock and attempts to cut himself but he can't because he really doesn't want to die. This changes him by making him know that pity gets you no where. Brian continues to persevere throughout the book.

    On page 117 after Brian try's to take his life he decides that he just cant! Instead of this Brian Remolded himself to be strong and persevere even though it may be very difficult. This shows the reader how powerful the mind is. Even though Brian was sad he tricked his brain into being happy. This event is important to the book because it describes to the reader how he escaped the deep dark mental pit that he was in before.

    On page 119 Brian stares down at the deep blue water and suddenly he remembers biology where his teacher told him that water bends light! He starts to aim slightly beside the fish and ends up catching 6 fish! Brian is blown away by how easy it was and felt dumb for not thinking of it before. This changes Brian by giving him a valuable form of nutriments and allowing him to begin to work smart not always hard.

    On page 119 Brian gets his first meat. Brian's first meat was a ruffled goose. One thing that really annoyed about the birds were that they could be sitting beside him forever and he still wouldn't notice them. Brian finally managed to get a catch when he used his bow and arrow. This event changed Brian by giving him a good form of nutrients. This also gave him the confidence to keep going.

    When all is Good it goes Bad
    Have you ever heard the saying "When all is right it goes terribly wrong"? Well this is is the perfect saying to describe this part of Brian's adventure. All is well, Brian is healthy and rather happy but then as he is washing his hands of in the lake on page 139 he gets trampled by a ginormous moose he is nearly dead when he crawls back to his camp and gets hit by a horrible tornado. This changes Brian by teaching him the lesson that it can't be good forever.

    Survival pack
    Twisted and bent by the tornado, on page 165 Brian notices a small yellow thing sticking out of the water. He is astonished when is realizes that its the tip of the plane! Brian remembers that there was a survival pack! He dives into the tip of the plane and finds the pack. The pack contains treasures beyond his imagination, a rife, an emergency transmitter which he switched a few times but nothing happened so he stopped, and food, lots of food! This makes Brian increasingly happy and nourished.

    Rescue!!
    On page 172 Brian is cooking his new gourmet dinners from the food packets when all of a sudden he hears a noise. Its very faint at first but then it grows. Its a plane Brian screams with excitement and sprints to get the wood to start a signal fire but it isn't needed the plane gently lands on the water and a pilot steps out. Brian is in shock and simply asks the pilot if he wants some dinner. Then Brian is rescued and returns safely to his family. Brian is out of the woods but won't forget it.
