    The Haitian Revolution
    The Haitian Revolution began in 1780. It was between Haitian slaves, colonists, the armies of the British and the French colonizers, and a number of other parties. The Haitian slaves wanted freedom.

    On January 2, 1780 The slave population was about half a million. The number of free colonists was about eight times fewer than the black slave population.Roughly 500,000 African slaves, 32,000 European colonists, and 24,000 affranchis made up the population.

    On April 1, 1789 During the French Revolution in 1789 Saint-Domingue preceded-and helped inspire-the Haitian Revolution. Saint-Domingue’s white elite population began a movement for self-government and free trade. The government succeeded in 1792

    Attacking the Caucasians
    On August 21, 1791 the Maroons and slaves attacked the Caucasians because they tried to get the General Assembly to persuade that citizenship included the free persons of color but Oge and Chavannes forces were badly beaten.

    On December 23, 1791 the decree was was repealed. The Assembly ordered commissioners to go to Saint-Domingue with 18,000 troops and restore control. They arrived in Saint-Domingue and their position was weaker because they had 6,000 troops. The commissioners could not bring peace to Saint-Domingue with 6,000 troops. France’s problem was to bring unity between the free people of color and the Caucasians against the slaves. After that the free people of color were given citizenship.

    On August 23, 1802 Toussaint and his army fought the French troops but Toussaint and his army were defeated. Toussaint then resigned from governorship. Toussaint's army joined the French and Toussaint was sent to a jail in France.

    On August 23, 1802 Leclerc ordered Toussaint's general, Jean-Jacques Dessalines and other officers to take the rebel slave's weapons but their attempt failed. Black officers that were in the French military resigned and turned against the French. Rochambeau who was the son of a famous veteran, had started a campaign that focused on anti-racism.

    In 1804 the French surrendered to Haiti. Haiti was then a slave free state and they declared independance. Since then Haiti has been and is still today a slave free state.

    Near the end of the war in 1804 things started to settle down. Everybody started to die. People were starting to give up.
  • Almost Over

    Almost Over
    By this time in 1804 everybody was giving up. All of the different groups were surrendering. Soon everyone gave up.
