    The Spanish soldiers were starting to enslave the native Taino and Ciboney people not far after December 1492, when Italian navigator Christopher Columbus sighted the island that he called La Isla Española.

    The island’s population, (meaning the natives) was forced to go gold, mining. The workday devastated them because of the European diseases and brutal working conditions.by the end of the 16th century the people had died off because of these things.

    By 1789 the Saint-Domingue population was about 556,000 and included roughly 500,000 African slaves, 32,000 European colonists, and 24,000 affranchis (those people had mixed culture.)

    In the late 1790s Toussaint Louverture, a leader for the military, had taken control of multiple areas. With that, he earned the first support of french agents.

    In 1791 fighting broke out between Europeans and affranchis, a few months later by early august, thousands of slaves rose to fight for their freedom françois-dominique toussaint leading the slaves in the war.

    In 1793, Léger-Félicité Sonthonax,a leader from France was sent to regain order of the country. When he was there he offered freedom to slaves who joined his army to help fight during the war. After he won the battle he soon destroyed slavery altogether.

    Toussaint wasn't doing so good for several months against Leclerc’s forces before agreeing to stop the war in its tracks on May 1802. however, the agreement had been abused by the french, so they broke it and imprisoned toussaint in france. He died on April 7, 1803.

    Napoleon was trying to restore slavery in Saint-Domingue. he was successful in some places but not in others, this time however he managed to win against the french commander as well as a large part of his army. then, in November 1803 the viscount de Rochambeau surrendered to him.

    Around October 1804 Dessalines assumed that the title of Emperor Jacques was going to him, but in October 1806 he was killed while trying to stop a riot with mulattos, so Henry Christophe took control of this from his city in the north.

    Sadly in 1820 Christophe committed suicide.however, Haiti’s independence was not recognized by France until 1825, and then the french came with a repayment of 100 million francs, around 1887.
