  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    After the French were defeated, the Native Americans continued to fight against the British in order to keep them from taking more land. The British eventually signed the Proclamation, stating that they wouldn't settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. However, the colonists ignored it and ventured West regardless.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    After the French and Indian War, taxes began to be placed on colonists. The Stamp Act was intended to raise and build a new colonial army. It placed taxes on legal documents, newspapers, etc.
  • Articles of Confederation

    Articles of Confederation
    The Articles of Confederation was the first written constitution of the United States. Under the Confederation, the majority of the power went to individual states.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    This treaty was passed to end the Revolutionary War. Asa result, the U.S. gained its independence from Great Britain. The U.S. also took control of all land stretching West of the Mississippi River.
  • Constitutional Convention

    There was a meeting in Philidelphia in 1787, which became known as the Constitutional Convention. The purpose of this meeting was to revise the Articles of Confederation.
  • Separation of Powers

    Separation of Powers
    In the 18th century, The Founding Fathers separated the new government into 3 branches. This idea came about from Baron de Montesquieu. The legislative branch makes the laws, the executive branch enforces the laws, and the judicial branch interprets the laws.
