  • Missouri Compromise

    A law was proposed by Henry Clay that Missouri would be a slave state and Maine would be a free state. The North and the South wanted to be equal in Congress. Henry Clay proposed the law. It caused more people to think about slavery and more people in the North to become abolitionists.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot and other Northerners were revolting slavery in the South. So, David Wilmot was a representative of Pennsylvania and proposed a ban on slavery in all Mexican Cession Territories, the bill passed the House of representatives but not Senate. This event angered Southern plantation owners who viewed the bill as an attack on slavery by the North which caused more tension between the two on slavery. It was purposed in Pennsylvania and was meant to end in all Mexican territories.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Basically the whole country was affected but they were all affected differently.The compromise allowed slavery to grow above the Missouri Compromise line. It also tried to put a limit on slavery in certain areas. South was upset when there slaves were running away and escaping to be free. A series of laws meant to solve the controversy over slavery was passed by congress. Officers were allowed to arrest anyone who could be a runaway slave and suspects had no right to trial.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    This affects the slaves because they are being taken away for all that they have worked for. This also hurts the North because North does not want slavery. They are upset that slaves who went through so much to be free are being forced to go back and work for slave owners in the south. This happened because Southerners were afraid of losing their slaves because they all wanted to be free slaves.
  • Uncle Tom’s Cabin

    Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" which caused a lot of conflict between the North and South. Harriet wanted to show people the lives of slaves. As people read the book the North became to hate slavery more and more and many Northerners became abolitionists. The South was offended because they said they didn’t treat their slaves like this. It was in Litchfield, Connecticut on March 20, 1852.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act / Bleeding Kansas

    The debate over slavery continued with Kansas and Nebraska territories and the South refused to admit the territories because they lay above the compromise line. Stephen Douglas helped pass the Kansas-Nebraska Act that allowed people in the territories to decide slavery by popular sovereignty. The South supported it and hoped new territories would be slave states. The North were outraged and felt Douglas had betrayed them into allowing more slavery. See more on the link!
  • Dred Scott Case

    A slave master and a slave moved to the west and the slave wanted to be free. The slave thought he could sue his owner because the land that they moved to was free for slaves. He lost the case because slaves cant sue and he's the owners property. This changed history by making the Missouri Compromise useless because the court case overrules the boundary line that was non slave land.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas were both trying to share their views especially on slavery. Douglas and Lincoln shared their views at a debate which were followed throughout the country most in Illinois. Douglas won the debate but Lincoln became a national figure which helped him get the presidency later. It caused more people to debate their opinions more consistently and changed how slavery worked. It took place in Illinois.
  • John Brown’s Raid

    John Brown helped slaves to start a riot for freedom. The slaves wanted to be free so they agreed to help. Their riot was put down and John Brown was hung. This made the North proud of John Brown because he fought to end slavery which most of them were against. They were upset that he was hung. The South was angry and saw it as the North trying to overthrow them. This took place on October 16, 1859 on Harper’s Ferry.
  • Lincoln’s Election of 1860

    Abraham Lincoln and the South were important with what happened before and during the election. Most of the North and West wanted Lincoln as president because he didn't want slavery to move to the West. He thought Africans should have life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. After Lincoln became president he the South got mad and scared that the states will be uneven with slave and non slave states.The were afraid of not having a voice so the broke away from the country.
  • Southern Secession

    This involves the North and South. The South was unhappy with the lack of the laws being enforced. The South seceded because they disliked this and believed it was unfair. The union was broken when the South seceded. This took place in the South.
