Georgia/U.S. History Comparative Timeline

  • Kettle Creek, GA

    American Loyalists were defeated by Patriots at Kettle Creek, GA. This was one of the most important battles of the American Revolutionary War. This victory by the Patriots showed the determination of their forces to defeat the Loyalists.
  • Surrender of Fort Sackville

    George Rogers Clark accepts Hamilton's surrender of Fort Sackville in Vincennes Indiana
  • Georgia becomes fourth state to ratify the U.S.Constitution

    On January 2nd 1788, the state of Georgia ratified the U.S. Constitution. They are the fourth state to do so. *This is important because out of the thirteen colonies, Georgia was the newest colony.
  • Cyrus Griffin

    On January 22nd 1788, the Continental Congress elected Cyrus Griffin to serve as what would be their last president. * This is important because of the ratification of the US Constitution set new guidelines for the election of the president.

    • This was passed to denote the isolationism the United States wished to participate in, protecting its birthright.
  • The Treaty of New Echota

    When gold was discovered on Cherokee land, they were forced to move across the Mississippi. A small portion on the Cherokee agreed to the move and to the relinquishing of Cherokee Land.
  • Second Seminole War

    The second Seminole War breaks out in Central Florida.
  • The Southern Baptist Convention

    The Southern Baptist Convention was formed on May 8th, 1845 after a split from Northern Baptist over the issue of slavery. The Southern Baptist Convention supported slavery and segregation.

    On January 5th 1861, the Federal Government sends 250 troops to Fort Sumter.

    Georgia becomes the fifth state to secede from the Union. This movement from the southern states started of the election of Abraham Lincoln.

    • During the Civil War Jefferson Davis called for a day of fasting and prayer to allow the sides to reflect on the war.

    On September 19th 1863, the two-day Battle of Chickamauga begins. Chickamauga, GA is located within the current day Chattanooga, TN metro area.
  • Sherman Approaches Atlanta

    Beginning in May, Union forces began a campaign on Atlanta. This campaign would last until November when Sherman would continue his "march to the sea".

  • Rejoining the Union

    On June 25th 1868, Georgia along with Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, North Carolina, and South Carolina were re-admitted to the Union.
  • Francis L. Cardozo

    Francis L. Cardozo becomes the first black cabinet member, when he is elected as the Secretary of State in South Carolina.
  • Fifteenth Amendment is ratified. Georgia is readmitted to the Union.

    African Americans were allowed to exercise their right to vote. After many decades, of not being able to vote, due to discrimination, blacks were about to have a voice.

    Rebecca Felton from Georgia became the first woman appointed to the U.S. Senate

    *The first woman was appointed to the position of special investigator another step for womans rights.
  • 1st State poor house opened in Smyrna, Georgia

    In response to declining economic conditions, Georgia opens the states first poor house

    Tornado rips through Gainesville, GA killing 203, injuring 1,800

  • Massachusetts Ratifies Bill of Rights

    *Just like Georgia Massachusetts finally ratifies the Bill of rights something the rest of the state had already done.

    Walton County Georgia, Roger and Dorothy Malcolm and George and Mae Murray Dorsey were lynched. President Truman orders FBI investigation, no arrest ever made.

  • Black Church destroyed by Fire in Savannah

    *A Black church was destroyed by arsonist.
  • First black student to register at University of Mississippi

    *Even during the period of hate, students still made a stance by registering for college.

    Overnight riot left 6 black men dead, autopsies show they were shot in the back with police issued weapons.
  • Henry Marlow Killed

    • Beaten and shot Marlows killers were put on trial and acquitted by an all white jury which led to rioting and arson. This activity was also seen in Georgia as a response to violence on blacks.
