    Frederick was born in Tuckahoe Maryland in February of 1818. He was with his mother but they were separated not long after his birth. His father was believed to be a white man.

    Frederick was able to give dates after he left Baltimore. He left Baltimore to go live with master Thomas Auld at St. Michael's. In Baltimore he learned how to read and write by bribing and tricking the little kids in the streets to teach him.

    At this time Fredericks master went and joined a church. Frederick hoped that this would make his master humble and kind, but that was not the case. Fredericks master became more cruel to his slaves. He beat them more often and barley fed them. Frederick believed it was because he had people in the church that supported each others cruelty to their slaves.
  • Mr. Covey

    Mr. Covey
    Fredericks master, Thomas Auld, sent him to Mr. Covey. Thomas did this to try and break Frederick. Covey was know as the "nigger-breaker". Covey was very cruel and always watched his slaves, therefore his slaves never stopped working even when Covey left. Covey was known to sneak up on his slaves and catch them not working. If he caught them not working he would make an example out of them.

    Over Christmas the slaves got from Christmas Day until New Years off. They don't have to do any labor except to feed and take care of the livestock. They are allowed to travel to go see family and they all save their liquor for this time. They all dance and celebrate this time. They drink their liquor until they are drunk and if you don't get drunk you are deemed a disgrace.

    Frederick left Mr. Covey and went to live with Mr. William Freeland. Mr. Freeland was very different from Mr. Covey. Mr. Freeland didn't belong to a religion and wasn't rich. Even though he wasn't rich he was still an educated southern gentleman.

    At this point in time Frederick found about how old he was. He had came about it because his master at that time had told him he was about twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old.

    At this time Frederick put together a "religious social group". There they didn't learn about religion, they learned how to read and write. As they talked they all wanted to run away so they made a plan. The plan was to travel North on the river at night until they reach the limits of Maryland. Frederick had to make protections so if they got caught they would still have the chance to get away.

    At this time Frederick was back in Baltimore. He had a job working in the shipyard. He got paid for doing this, but he wasn't able to keep the money that he earned. He had to give his hard earned money to his master.
