First Capetian King of France

Third Crusade

Spurred by religous zeal, King Henry II of England and King Philip II ended their feud with each other to start the Third Crusade in 1189. The Crusades were the bloodiest acts of geonicide up to that point in history.

Battle of Bouvines

Jul 27, 1214

On July 27, 1214, Philip Augustus defeats John of England, the Flanders Count, and Otto IV of Germany. It was a great victory for France and gained them some of their land back.

Treaty of Paris

Dec 4, 1259

The British and the French signed the treaty of Paris on December 4, 1259 in Paris, France. The treaty ended 100 years of conflict and settled the future of English posession in France.

Philip IV expands monarchy

Jan 1, 1300

Philip IV expands the power of the monarchy by expanding royal beuracracy. By 1300, France had the largest and best governed monarchy.

Hugh Capet became the first "King of the Franks", ending the Carloginian dynasty and starting the Capetian dynasty in 987. The Capetian dynasty weakened the power of France.
