  • Korean War

    Korean War
    Communist North Korea invaded South Korea, the United States aided South Korea and the Soviet Union aided North Korea. North Korea was winning for most of the war until Inchon, a blockade, was launched. North Korea was pushed back to the Chinese border at the Yalu River. China then invaded and the U.S. and South Korean soldiers were pushed back. The fighting ended on 27 July 1953 in an armistice and the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

    Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka
    Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka is a supreme court case that declared segregation in public schools to be unconstitutional. This case opened the doors for more cases fighting against segregation. This case overturned Plessy vs. Ferguson which allowed the states to segregate. In the case a young black girl wanted to go to the school that was closest to her but she was not allowed to because the school was an all white school, and her parents sued, declaring separate but equal is not equal.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik
    Sputnik, launched by the Soviet Union, is the first ever aritfical satellite. The launching of Sputnik was the beginning of the "space race" between the Soviet Union and the United States. Americans were terrified of what the Soviet Union was now capable of and rushed to build its own satellite, which would be called the explorer. The Soviet Union and United States were now in a race to see who could achieve the most "firsts" in space.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    Bay of Pigs Invasion is a failed military invasion in Cuba by the CIA. The goal of the invasion was to overthrow the communist regime under Fidel Castro. The invasions resulted in embarrassment for the United States and the CIA. Cuban exiles known as Brigade 2506 invaded Cuba and many were killed.

    The University of Alabama was desegregated in 1963. George Wallace famously stood in front of the door to the university as a stand against the integration of schools.

    Betty Friedon wrote the Feminine Mystique a book that challenged how women were seen and how women viewed themselves. In the book Friedon encourages women to not just be in their stereotypical role of housewife but to have jobs and careers.

    The Free Speech Movement was created at UC Berkeley were students were taking a stand so that the student body could be involved in politics.
  • Richard Nixon visits China

    Richard Nixon visits China
    When Richard Nixon traveled to the People's Republic of China he became the first president to ever visit the PRC and ended the long divide between the two nations. Nixon described the meeting as "the week that changed the world."
  • Watergate scandal

    Watergate scandal
    The Watergate scandal occurred because of a break in at the Democratic Party's headquarters at the Watergate hotel. The people who broke into Watergate were attempting to bug the offices of the democrats. The break in was covered up by the Nixon Administration. When the Watergate scandal was brought to light many other of Nixon's administrations abuses were brought to life, which lead to congress drawing up articles of impeachment.

    The Fall of Saigon
    The Fall of Saigon is the capture of capital of South Vietnam by the North Vietnamese and the Vietcong. The fall of Saigon marks the end of the Vietnam War. Before the city fell there was a mass evacuation of Americans and South Vietnamese out of Saigon. After the North Vietnamese took over the city was renamed Hồ Chí Minh City, after the former president of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
  • Camp David Accords

    Camp David Accords
    The Camp David Accords were signed by Egyptian President Anwar El Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem on 17 September 1978 after the discussions at presidential retreat Camp David. War had been going on between Isreal and Egypt since 1948 and the Accords were a huge step forward to peace.
  • Sandra Day O'Connor

    Sandra Day O'Connor
    Sandra Day O'Connor is the first woman appointed to the US supreme court. Sandra Day O'Connor was nominated by president Ronald Reagan and received a unanimous vote from the senate. She served from 24 years, ending her term in 2006.
  • "Just say no"

    "Just say no"
    "Just Say No" was a campaign during the War on Drugs in the 80's and 90's. The slogan was made and advertised by First Lady Nancy Reagan. Nancy Reagan and the National Institute of Health wanted to warn teen on the dangers of drugs. Nancy traveled around the country to schools and rehabilitation centers and appeared on talk shows and even worked with the Girl Scouts all in an effort to fight the war on drugs.
  • German Reunification

    German Reunification
    German Reunification is the process in which East and West Germany were reunited. This unification of Germany was partially made possible by the new policies of Mikhail Gorbachev. Mikhail Gorbachev realized that communism was not working and that the Soviet Union needed a change. The union was also caused by the fall of the Hungarian Border and thousands of East Germans escaped to the west. The unification treaty was signed on August 31 1990.
