BP Oil Spill
The Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded and killed 11 people. There was a leak in the BP pipe. The pipe was not plugged until 87 days after the leak began. Over that time, there is an estimate that 3.19 million barrels of oil leaked into the Gulf.

Started High School
I started high school at Calvary Baptist Day School. This is a private school outside of my county. I was the only person from my middle school to go here. -
Transferred to Davie County High School
I transferred from Calvary Baptist Day School to the public high school in my county. This is the only high school in the county and is where all the students I grew up going to school with went.

Hurricane Irene hit NC
Hurricane Irene touched down in Cape Lookout. There was flooding and wind damage along the coast. There were 5 deaths in North Carolina from this tropical storm.

All US Troops Left Iraq
After troops being in Iraq for around 9 years, President Obama brought all the remaining troops out of Iraq by the end on 2011. There was about 39,000 troops remaining when Obama made this announcement. This ended a war that had divided the United States for years.

Pat McCrory Elected Governor
Governor Pat McCrory won his race for Governor against the democratic Lieutenant Governor Walter H. Dalton. McCrory had run and previously lost the election in 2008 but came back and won in 2012. He was favored to win in 2012 and was the previous mayor in Charlotte, NC.

Mission Trip to Jamaica
I took my first mission trip to an orphanage in Christiania, Jamaica. As of now, I have taken 3 additional trips to this one. My experiences with the children throughout this trip helped me decide to major in Elementary Education. -
Jonathan Ferrell Shooting
Johnathan Ferrel, 24, was shot 10 times by Randal Kerrick, a Charlotte police officer. Ferrel was unarmed. The jury for this case was unable to come to an agreement and the judge filed a mistrial. The public saw this as a racial case and many protested.

Two Week Government Shutdown
Republicans and democrats could not agree on the a budget bill. This disagreement shut the government down for two weeks. Around 800,000 "non-essential" government workers were given a leave of absence during this time.

Started Freshman Year at NC State
I graduated from high school in June of 2014 and then moved into University Towers to being my freshman year as a Elementary Education major at NC State. Raleigh is 1 hour and 45 minutes from my hometown, Advance. -
Gay Marriage Became Legal in NC
North Carolina was the 28th state to legalize gay marriage. Many people rushed to the register of deeds offices to receive their marriages licenses immediately. This was a life-changing day for many North Carolinians and their families.
