Polly a friend of Matilda and a servant of the Cook family dies. At the time, no one knows the specific cause of the death but she went through a lot of pain before she died. -
Mother gets a horrendous fever known as yellow fever
When Mattie and Grandfather are walking home, they see a man dump Mattie's mother on the floor. They carry her to the coffeehouse and call a doctor. The doctor helps her mother and tell Mattie to give her a bath every 4 years. -
Mattie leaves for the Ludington's
Mattie, grandfather, and another family get in a wagon and travel to another place to get out town. When they are about to cross into the other town, the doctor stops them and sends Mattie and Grandfather away because they thing grandfather is sick. -
Mattie get's the yellow fever
Mattie passes out and wakes up in a hospital. The nurse helps Mattie recover from the fever. While Mattie is recovering, grandfather goes to coffeehouse to find that it is locked. -
Mattie meets and orphan girl named Nell
While Mattie was walking home, she comes across a little girl who was an orphan. She decides to take care of her. Mattie also comes across Eliza and goes to her hoes where her brother and his kids lived. -
Grandfather dies
Mattie and grandfather stay at the robbed coffeehouse. One night robbers get in and try to rob the place. When grandfather was trying to protect Mattie, he got beat to death -
Kids get fever
Nell and Eliza's nephews get the fever. They go to the coffeehouse to get into a cooler area. -
The frost finally arrives
Mattie wakes up to frost in the garden. At first she doesn't believe it but then she realizes that the frost has really come. Eliza and Mattie begin to celebrate. -
Coming together
Mattie meets up with Nathaniel and they start hanging out. Eventually George Washington comes back and so does Mattie's mother. Eliza and everybody else have a feast to end the story.
