Growth of Feminism in Canada

  • Married Women's Property Act

The act makes a wife responsible for her own property, wages, profits etc. Before this, men were responsible for all of this and it was very hard for women to gain respect because she could not support her chidren or have a fair wage and contribute to a marriage. This was one of the first steps to creating the more fair society for women that we live in today.
  • Ontario Properties

Ontario grants women the right to own property and buy and sell without her husbands permission. This was a small step to women gaining full independence in regards to their property. Back in this era, women had very little independence which was very different from today. This was a big thing to allow women the ability to own property because it meant being slightly more independent and they could do things without their husbands.
  • Section 179 of the Criminial Code

This section of the criminal code prevents any posession of any contraceptive and makes abortion illegal. This law is significant becasue it shows how women had no freedom in regards to their bodies and were not in control of their bodies at all. This law remained unchanged until 1969. This is significiant because it shows that during this time, women bodies were mostly considered men's properties which is horrible and unfair. The end of this law created more fairness for women today.
  • WW1

Many women began working as nurses and in facroties to suply for the war. This was the beginning of women in the work force. Although women were not allowed to fight at war, it was one of the first times women were respected in the working field and made a big difference for working women for the future.
  • Manitoba becomes first province to give women the right to vote

The first time in Canada that women are allowed to vote. This is after much hard work for women, including Nellie McClung, who petitioned at parliament requesting the right to vote. This was a big step in making it legal for all women to vote in Canada.
  • Women are defined as "persons"

Thanks to the "famous five", women are now defined legally as persons. This made it so women are now under all statues and laws which was one step to equality in the legal field.
  • WW2

To encourage women to work during the war, childcare centers were opened up and tax incentives were provided. After the war, they were ended and wages were still wildy unfair for women. Women were still on a very un-equal standard however the war aided them to do men's jobs while they were away, gaining a little more respect.
  • Civil Rights Act

The Act prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, or sex. This was a big step however it is easy to forget women were still very unfairly underpaid and recieved less pay for the same job a man would do.
  • Abortion becomes legal in Canada

This was a big step in regards to feminism because women now have the right to opt out of pregnancy when they didn't before. This gave women more control of their own bodies for an issue that men would never have to deal with.
  • Today

Although we have come a very long way, gender equality is still unjust. Women still face in-equality in regards to wages and in the workforce. Although we have now become fully indepent in regards to our bodies and propety ownership as shown on the timeline, we still have a way to go.
