    Executive order 9066 gave the military control to "evacuate" people who may be a threat to the war effort. This is when the Japanese were forced to move to the internment camps, including Jeanne
  • Jeanne and her Family are Evacuated to Manzanar

    Jeanne and her Family are Evacuated to Manzanar
    Jeanne and her family are given the order to move out of their home and to the relocation site in 48 hours. She remembers crying as she watched her mother frantically load up her items in the car and try to sell off family heirlooms that they could not carry.

    The Wakatsukis stayed at the Manzanar Relocation Camp for almost 3 years. During those 3 years, Jeanne changed physically and mentally as she became more mature in understanding her surroundings. She also learns new things about the changing world around her.

    Jeanne and her family finally arrive at the Manzanar Relocation Camp in the Owens Valley. She was very tired and everyone was very anxious, so she broke the tension by shouting, "Hey! This bus is full of Wakatuki's!"

    Jeanne's father arrived at the camp and nobody hugged him except Jeanne. She knew that he was bad and had done some bad things, but she knew that he was still her father.

    When Jeanne's father arrived at Manzanar, he was a drunk and very volatile person. But as time went on and the stay in Manzanar grew longer, he changed to become a nicer and calmer person. This change also changed Jeanne's view of her father, which changed her personality.

    The December Riot
    This was a riot caused by the unfair treatment of a cook who was taken by the military for giving more food to sicker people. Jeanne did not want the riot to happen and was scared. Her father called them idiots, as he knew that most of them would get caught or killed. In the end, 2 people died and around 10 were wounded in the riot.

    Jeanne's Father Changes
    When Jeanne's father first arrived at Manzanar, he was a drunken old man who would always be stumbling around camp. Now he changed into a respectable man who also changed Jeanne's personality. He is no longer mean and drunk, but spends his time painting, or caring for his zen garden.

    The Wakatsuki's Leave Manzanar
    The military had given the order to close the camps after around 3 years. The Wakatsuki's were able to leave the camp when they wanted to and go back to their own homes.
