Pigeon Post
Pigeons are used to carry messages because they can fly straight home from wherever they are. You tie a scroll to thier leg and send them back from where they came from, or where they have to go. However, this is a one way postal service, meaning it is always back to base. -
Mail Drops
People first got news of a postal service in the colonies. Mail was brought in from overseas or sent, and they used coffeehouses and taverns as mail drops. Mail was sorted into bins and then delivered from there. -
De Valayer's Mailbox
A Frenchman named De Valayer set up a postal service. He made mailboxes, and would deliver mail, as long as the mail was in the envelopes he sold. However, a few people ruined his business by putting mice in the mail boxes. -
The Post Office
The United States Postal Service began, and mailing packages as well as letters was popular. After Benjamin Franklin was appointed as Postmaster, the delivery time was cut down, and there were multiple mail routes. -
Mail Coaches
The first mail coach runs from Bristol to England, and is so successful that by 1797 there are over 42 routes. John Palmer proposed that the mail should be carried in special coaches with good horses, armed guards, and no outside passengers. -
The Telgram
The first telegram was sent by Morse code. An operator tapped the message out in code using a machine called a Morse key. The message traveled to another operator who decoded the long and short taps into words, and then passed the message on. -
The Pony Express
Used horse and rider relay teams along a 2000-mile route. Riders would stop in nearby towns, and would pick up mail from coffee houses and taverns.The Pony Express was the name of the company, and while it only lasted for 19 months, it was faster than the competition. -
Electronic Mail
The first emails had to be printed out before they could be read, because most computers did not have screens at this time. However, it was still considered 'Electronic Mail' because it was sent from a device much like a computer. Many people called it an 'email printer'. -
The first Email program
AOL, MAILBOX, Prodigy, and CompuServe had all showed up around this time, and had electronic mail providers. ‘Popular’ web mail services like Hotmail showed up in 1996/97. However, most people didn't have an email account until the 2000. -
Gmail
Gmail had 1 GB of storage. 500 times more than Microsoft. It had many advanced features that blew Yahoo and Microsoft away, and was capable of replacing PC software. Since it was so advanced (and it came out on April Fools') many people though it was a hoax, however it turned out to be true and in under 3 years, almost everyone was using it. -
Email is widely used
Our whole world revolves around emails. It is the primary means of direct communication, and allowed people to talk wherever they are. Plus there are new added features, like allowing you to recall emails on Microsoft. -
Advancements in Email
Now with new technology, you can pre-write your emails, and choose when they should be sent, and you don’t have to be around. There are many new advancements that makes Email better. -
Social media replaces email
Now, email slowly fades out of our lives. With social media becoming bigger than ever, we use instant messaging as a quicker way to contact larger groups of people. -
Email will always be around
Nothing will replace email, because it is used for so many things, especially making accounts on websites and social media. We will probably lean towards instant messaging and become faster and easier, but will be used less for communication. -
The Evolution of Email
In about 10 years, Gmail will evolve in ways we didn’t think could happen.Senders will be putting richer information such as tracking package data, surveys and so on. Augmented intelligence will help us figure out what to say, who to say it to, and when to say it.
