    Missouri compromise

    Southern congressmen wanted to establish a policy to guide the expansion of slavery into the new western territory. Missouri’s application for statehood as a slave state sparked a bitter national debate. The north had been abolishing slavery throughout the states as it was immoral. the south believed it needed slaves in order to obtain its business. this compromise was the first major rift in the two sides of the country creating sectionalism and Maine.

    Nat turners rebellion

    Nat Turner's rebellion opposed the argument that southern slave owners had to have slavery. They had claimed that it was humane that it benefited them,but if 55 slaves fought and killed for there freedom there had to be something wrong. Virginia G had two options, one being they get rid of slavery all together like the northern states were or they could make slavery much worse. Making it much worse just barely passed. This cruelty made it more so that northern abolitionist wanted to endslavery.

    the compromise of 1850

    1850 compromise settle many things that were being argued in Congress. Although it made California a free state and other things that benefited the northern abolitionist it would outrage those against slavery. This is because of the fugitive slave act. That took runaway slaves from free states a forced their return. This caused hysteria throughout the north. Free men would be kidnapped by bounty hunters and brought back as slaves. Putting the effect of slavery in the face of the north.

    This book brought the horrors of slavery in the hands of the north. it showed them the real devastation that was occurring a few hundred miles south. it took the average person and turned them into abolitionist fuel the fire to destroy slavery.

    Bleeding Kansas

    This was a battle of popular sovereignty. Abolitionist and slave owners flocked into Kansas hoping to create another state on their side. Many believe this is where the civil war started. There was a lot of bloodshed southern slave owner would pay other southerners to sit at the border preventing any northerners. It was clear that the south had started fighting the war before Lincoln had become president.

    Dred Scott v. Sanford

    Dread Scott was a slave brought to a free state but was not granted freedom. The case went to the supreme court where it was ruled that since he was black he had no right to sue and that he was nothing more than property. The ruling would justify that there is no such thing as a free state because slaves are property and can be bought anywhere. The north and the south had a fast difference in ideology now and the tension was growing.

    Nothing says unity like not including a candidate on a ballot. the south feared Lincolns anti-slave ideas. they felt that it was their choice to have slavery and new that if they stayed with the country it would be abolished politicly. so they broke up. Lincoln said they can't do that and started the war.
