Events Leading up the Declaration of Independence

  • Albany Plan

    Albany Plan
    The Albany Plan was a plan to create a unified government for the Thirteen Colonies. Benjamin Franklin was one who suggested it.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp Act was a tax on paper items, such as stamps, paper, legal documents, newspaper, etc. The Britain Parliament created this to get revenue from the American colonies.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    The British army soldiers shot and killed some people while under attack by a mob, this was known as the Boston Massacre. It was a small riot between British soldiers and American colonists. American colonists insulted and screamed at the soldiers making the soldiers angry and they shot into the crowd killing five people.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    The Boston Tea Party was a way to protest the Tea Act. This was organized by Boston patriots. The colonists disguised as Indians, boarded the ships, and threw tea overboard. The Parliament put the intolerable acts in place as an outcome for Boston.
  • First Continental Congress

    First Continental Congress
    Parliament passed another set of laws, to punish the colonists for the troubles in Britain and elsewhere. The purpose of this was to oppose the Stamp Act.
  • Second Continental Congress

    Second Continental Congress
    The Second Continental Congress by force of circumstance became the nation's first national government. They declared American Independence from Great Britain in 1776. The purpose of the Second Continental Congress was to draft the Articles of Confederation.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    This was what the Americans called the laws passed by the British Parliament after the Boston Tea Party. The three laws of the intolerable acts were 1.) the Boston Harbor was closed until all tea was paid off.
    2.) The government of Massachusetts was under strict British control.
    3.) British troops accused of murder would be tried in England and not the colonies.
    In order for the Bostonians not to starve the other colonies sent food and money to them.
  • Battles of Lexington and Concord

    Battles of Lexington and Concord
    The British troops were sent in April, 1775 to confiscate colonial weapons and they ran into a untrained angry militia. The militia defeated seven hundred soldiers and this unexpected victory boosted their confidence for the war.
  • Start and End of American Revolution

    Start and End of American Revolution
    The American Revolution started in 1775 and ended in 1783. The American colonists won independence from Great Britain and became the United States of America. The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first battles of the American Revolution. The French assisted the Continental Army force the British to surrender in Yorktown, Virginia. That's when the Americans won their independence.

    The US Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress meeting in 1776 in Pennsylvania. It declared independence from Britain and the formation of a new country. It had the natural rights of the people, declaring independence from Britain, and the British wrong doings.
