  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise occurred on March 6, 1820. In the Compromise, Missouri became a slave state and Maine became a free state. The 36/30 line was also created and stated the North would get everything above it, and the South would get everything below it.
  • Nat Turners Rebellion

    Nat Turners Rebellion
    The Nat Turner Rebellion occurred August 21st through the 23rd in 1831. Nat Turner was a slave who began to rebel against owner and the owners families, by killing them. The result was that every slave involved was executed, and harsher punishment was put onto other innocent slaves.

    The Compromise of 1850 occurred on January 29th in 1850.
    In the End California was made a free state, The Mexican cession held a vote on slavery, and Texas was made a slave state. The fugitive slave act was also passed and was made to help the south with its problems. It said, you had to recapture runaway slaves and if you helped runaway slaves you could be arrested and go to jail.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1852. The books purpose was to show the horrors of slavery in the south, to help convince people to be abolitionist against slavery. Due to the impact of the story,many Northerners became abolitionists. As a result the book was banned in the South.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    The purpose of the Kansas Nebraska Act was to organize the Nebraska Territory. Stephen Douglas split the territory into two places, Kansas, and Nebraska. Also in the act Slavery would be settled by popular sovereignty in the territory. The rest of the louisiana purchase land was made into a territory stretching from the North to the current southern boundary of Nebraska. As a result, bleeding Kansas began in 1854. Bleeding Kansas is when forces from North and South fought violently over slavery.

    Dred Scott Ruling
    The Dred Scott Ruling occurred in 1857. Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri but his owner had taken him to a place where slavery was deemed illegal, but then returned to Missouri. Then when Scott's owner died he sued for his freedom. Scott Claimed that he was once a free man in places where slavery was illegal. In the end the supreme court ruled 1.African Americans were not citizens(Free or Slave), 2. Slaves were property and protected by the 5th amendment.
  • John Browns Raid

    John Browns Raid
    On October 16th, 1859 John Brown conducted a raid on Harpers ferry(A U.S Arsenal). The purpose of the raid was too arm slaves and to begin a rebellion. In the end John Browns efforts failed and John Brown was hung for treason. He was mourned in the North, and his death was celebrated in the South.
  • 1860 Election

    1860 Election
    The 1860 Election was held on November 6th, 1860. In the end Abraham Lincoln won the election with the Republicans. When he was elected, many southern states said they would secede from the U.S. In the end South Carolina was the first to secede from the U.S. Lincolns first act as president was to make seceding from the U.S illegal. Even though it was made illegal,Mississippi,Florida,Alabama,Georgia,Louisiana and Texas soon followed in South Carolina's path. This would lead to the Civil War.
