Erickson's Timeline

  • trust v. mistrust (4 months)

    trust v. mistrust (4 months)
When Kelly was in daycare at 4 months of age she was constantly ignored by her caregiver. She wouldn't always be checked for her needs since there were several other babies that needed attention as well.
This is Erickson's first stage development.
Kelly was feeling anxious as a result of not being cared for immediately and that made her mistrust her caregiver who is supposed to give her the warmth needed by an infant. She instead needed to feel as if the world is a safe place.
  • Autonomy vs. Shame/Doubt (Kelly at the age of 3)

Autonomy vs. Shame/Doubt (Kelly at the age of 3)
Kelly would want to do everything by herself. She'd ask her mom if she could dress herself. Her mom would let her even if she couldn't quite zip up her jacket or button up her shirt.
Autonomy v. shame/doubt is Erickson's second stage of development.
Since her mother allows her to dress herself and overall give her that autonomy, Kelly has that feeling of independence and doesn't doubt her abilities as if her mother were to laugh at her or tell her no because she can't correctly dress herself.
  • Identity vs. Role Confusion (Kelly at the age of 18)

Identity vs. Role Confusion (Kelly at the age of 18)
At the age of 18, after graduating high school and starting her freshman year of college she felt as if in her personal life things were not clear. She just hoped to become a good person and be successful in whichever career she chose to follow. Slowly she made goals and decided to follow them in order to find herself.
This is Erickson's fifth developmental stage. Kelly tries to find herself and sets goals for herself in order to find herself.
