"Silent Spring" written by Rachel Carson is considered the start of the Environmental Movement. In this book Rachel Carson speaks about the damage done to the environment by the chemicals in pesticides. As one of the most influential books of the movement and a New York Times best seller, "Silent Spring" changed the way many people viewed the chemical industry. -
Santa Barbara Oil Spill
The American people were outraged at how this could have happened so they push legislation to advise and pass environmental protection. later that year the National Environmental Policy Act was passed. -

many people came together to discuss what they could do to spread environmentalism and many changed their lifestyles to help better protect the environment. -

This act regulated where pollutants were sent in the United States and how much would be sent there.also allows federal regulation of air pollution. -

This act gives the exact places nuclear waste can be put in the United States. As well as how much can be put there and how the waste need to be disposed of. -
Exxon Valdez oil tanker
On March 24th, 1989, the Exxon Valdez oil tanker collided with a reef and spilled millions of gallons into the ocean. As a result, many marine life and birds were affected and later died. This was the 2nd largest oil spill in all of history, only topped today by the BP oil spill. -
Pollution Prevention Act
The act focused on cost-effective changes that industries and businesses could make that could reduce pollution as well as improving business at the same time -
The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act
regulated pesticide use and distribution. It required all pesticides to be legally licensed to overall prevent bad pesticides from being used in farms and other locations. -
The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act
It allows the EPA to set maximums on how much pesticide residue can be left on foods. This provides the American public with overall much safer foods. -
The BP Oil Spill
This was the largest oil spill of all time and caused many marine life and birds as well to die. It took nearly a month to finally cause the spill to stop, and the public was shocked as to how this could have occurred.
