    By putting yourself in someone else's position so you can know why there feeling/acting the was they are.

    "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it. At this part in the book Scout just stated school and she hates it. she doesn't understand why miss. caroline acts the way she does. she doesn't know what miss. Carolin is feeling.

    "As Atticus had once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jem's skin and walk around in it: if I had gone alone to the Radley place at two in the morning, my funeral would have been held the next afternoon. So I left Jem alone and tried not to bother him." At this point in the book Jem, Scout, and Dill tried to sneack into the Radley house. Scout starts to realize what Jem is feeling and makes her first step to empathy.

    "Atticus said, 'I hope and pry I can get Jem and Scout through this without bitterness, and most of all, without catching Maycomb's usual disease.... I just hope Jem and Scout come to me for their answers instead of listening to the town." At this point Atticus has gotten picked to be Tom's attorney in the trail and people are giving Jem and Scout a hard time. Instead of begging bitter to Maycomb Atticus wants scout and Jem to feel empathy torawds them.

    "'We'll now Miss Jean Louise,' she said,' still think your father can't do anything? Still ashamed of him?' 'Nome,' I said meekly." At this point in the book Atticus had just shot the dog. Scout didn't give any empathy to Atticus before she relied that Atticus could shoot. She realized he was not showing the talent beacuse He doesn't fell it is necessary.

    "The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience." At this point in the book mrs. Dubose just yelled at Scout about Atticus. Atticus is telling Scout that even thought what she did was wrong Scout should still feel empathy for her. You can't tell someone how to feel.

    "Hey, Mr. Cunningham. How's your entailment gettin' along?" At this point Scout, Dill, and Jem follow Atticus to the jail. Mr. Cunningham is with a big mob of people wanting Tom Robinson. Scout see's Mr. Cunningham and started taking to him. When scout was try into have conversation with Mr. Cunningham, he relized that he shouldn't be doing this and feels empathy for them.

    "Your children last night made Walter Cunningham stand in my shoes for a minute. At this point in the book Atticus is talking to Jem and Scout the day after the mob. When Scout and Jem started talking to Mr. Cunningham, Mr. Cunningham felt empathy for Atticus and stopped the mob.

Atticus is trying to convince the court that everyone should be treated equally and that you shouldn't go to jail for a crime you didn't do. He is trying to get the court to feel empathy for Tom.
