  • Brown v. Board of Education

    This case overturned "separate but equal" because segregation was a violation with the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    ESEA was an act of primary and secondary education. It required equal access to education and established high standards and accountability.
  • PARC v. Pennsylvania

    This case overturned Pennsylvania law to secure a quality education for all children.
  • Mills v. Board of Education

    This case was one of the two important federal trial court rulings that helped to lay the foundation that eventually led to the passage of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

    Section 504 prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs run by federal agencies.
  • Equal Educational Opportunities Act

    EEOA prohibits against faculty, staff, and students, including racial segregation of students and requires school districts to take action to overcome barriers to students' equal participation.
  • Family Educational Rights of Privacy Act

    FERPA is a federal law that protects privacy of the students education records. This law applies to all schools that receive federal funds.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    EHA requires all schools receiving federal funding to provide handicapped children equal access to education and mandates that they be placed in the least restrictive education environment possible.

  • Florence County School District 4 v. Shannon Carter

    This case requires states to provide disabled children with FAPE. The court ruling agreed that the IEP proposed by the school district was inappropriate under the IDEA.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    This law replaced ESEA. States must test students in reading and math in grades 3-8 and once in high school. Results must be recorded, and schools are required to bring all students to proficiency level.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act

    This law replaced NCLB, and modified but did not eliminate provisions related to standardized tests given to the students.
