Early Formation of Earth

  • 13,800 BCE

    Big Bang

Scientists believe that our universe started when an extremely hot, small, and dense point exploded, hence "the big bang".
  • 4600 BCE

    Earth formation

Just like other planets, cosmic debris collided and coalesced to form Earth. There was so much energy from the collisions that Earth became unbelievably hot. Eventually, the outside cooled down, however Earth's core has since remained extremely hot, reaching temperatures similar to that of the surface temperatures of the sun.
  • Period: 4600 BCE to 4000 BCE

    Hadean Eon

The Hadean Eon is a geological eon of Earth Predating the Archaean. The Hadean Eon begins with Earth's formation and ended amidst the Heavy Bombardment.
  • 4570 BCE

    Planetary Accretion

Cosmic debris carrying metallic elements crashed into Earth and likely other planets too, depositing metals.
  • 4550 BCE

    Moon formation

More cosmic debris collides with Earth; however, this time the cosmic debris does not end up fusing onto earth as it did during Earth's creation, instead resulting in more debris from the collision, some of which would gather and end up forming the moon.
  • 4500 BCE

    Water

Spacial debris carrying water may have collided into earth somewhere between the creation of the earth and the moon.
  • 4000 BCE

    DNA forms

As the moon moved further away from eath, gravitational forces lessened, and the earth spun slower. During this time, the first strands of DNA are speculated to have formed. Later on, this would have let to the earliest lifeforms in a kind of a brown soup on a very warm Earth.
  • 3800 BCE

    Late Heavy Bombardment

Failed planets and smalled asteroids slammed into Earth and other planets, scarring their surface. During this time, some of the planets in the outer solar system may have moved closer to the sun then moved back to its original place. Heavy bombardment, in general, lasted from ~4.5 to 3.8 billion years ago, which is why 3.8 billion years ago is listed as the LATE heavy bombardment.
  • 1500 BCE

    Earth's core forms

Earth's inner core was formed 1-1.5 billion years ago
  • Planetary Cooling

Planetary cooling occurred from around 4.5-3.8 billion years ago
