  • Beagle Voyage (Jan)

    (Cape Verde Islands)January
    Darwin is exhilarated by his first observations.
    He says, "It first dawned on me that I might perhaps write a book on the geology of the various countries visited, and this made me thrill with delight"
  • Beagle Voyage (Feb)

    (Crossing the equator)February
    Charles Darwin is being shaved, and seems to be blindfolded by the ship-men captain FitzRoy says it is permitted, Charles claims that "the practice has many advocates"

    (Salvador Brazil)February
    Darwin explores Brazilian rain-forest's for the first time. He is very delighted with what he see's there, however he cannot seem to choose something captivating because there is much to see.

    (Punta Alta, Argentina)September
    "Darwin is Intrigued in the giant fossils he sees"
    'I have been wonderfully lucky with fossil bones. Some of the animals must have been of great dimensions! I am almost sure that many of them are quite new.' He claims.
  • Beagle Voyage (Dec)

    (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina)December
    Captain FitzRoy repatriates three native people he had brought to England on a previous voyage. FitzRoy attempts to start a Christian mission, which fails disastrously.
  • Beagle Voyage (march)

    (Falkland Islands)March
    Darwin finds the barren, windswept Falkland Islands 'desolate and wretched.' He then finds and breaks open 'primitive looking rocks' The falkland were filled with brachiopods "two-shelled animals once among the most abundant organisms on Earth."
  • Beagle Voyage (Aug)

    (Rio Negro, Argentina)August
    Darwin explores the "fertile lowland areas" named 'Pampas'. The people that lived there named 'gauchos'. The independence of the gauchos makes for interesting moments like being able to 'pull up [your] horse.'
  • Beagle Voyage (Jan-Feb)

    Chiloe island, Chile*January-February*
    Darwin watches as Mount Osorno erupts as he is on the island of Chiloe, He experienced an earthquake in the woods close to Valdivia. Watching the aftermath of the earquake shook him tremendously. He claims 'I believe this earthquake has done more in degrading or lessening the size of the island, than 100 years of ordinary wear and tear.'
  • Beagle Voyage (Sep-Oct)

    (Galapagos Islands)September-October
    Darwin discovers many different species of plants, birds, and tortoises exclusive to the Galapagos Islands, but they seem to be related to mainland species.
  • Beagle Voyage (June)

    (Cape town, South Africa)June
    Darwin states, "The first object in Cape Town which strikes the eye of a stranger is the number of bullock wagons... I have as yet not mentioned the well known Table Mountain; this great mass of horizontally stratified sandstone rises quite close behind the town to a height of 3,500 feet."

    Sydney, Australia*January*
    Arriving to the Sydney Cove Darwin congratulates himself that he was born an Englishman and enjoys the areas.
    Darwin soon finds out that there are many different mammals in Australia than he would've Thought.
  • Beagle Voyage (Apr)

    (Cocos Islands 'Keeling Islands')April
    Darwin examines coral reefs growing around the islands to try his theory of 'atoll formation' he says "I am glad we have visited these islands; such formations surely rank high amongst the wonderful objects of this world.'
  • Beagle Voyage (May)

    (Mauritius)May
    Darwin observes and states "I took a quiet walk along the sea coast to the north of the town; the plain is there quite uncultivated, consisting of a field of black lava smooted over with coarse grass and bushes, the greater part of which are mimosas."
  • Beagle Voyage (Aug)

    (Baha and Pernambuco, South America)August
    Darwin now in the jungles of South America discovers many fascinating creatures, Darwin now homesick and seasick he is concerned when the ship makes an abrupt detour to make additional longitude measurements. He states "This zig-zag manner of proceeding is very grievous... I loathe, abhor the sea, and all ships which sail on it."
  • Beagle Voyage (Oct)

    (Falmouth England)Dec 2nd
    Darwin says, "I reached home last night. My head is quite confused with so much delight." The beagle ship only being 27(90 feet), carried 74 persons and 22 clocks, 'in very close quarters!'
