Darwin's Observation

  • Beagle's Voyage

    The ship was captained by Captain FitzRoy. Darwin was hired as a naturalist for the trip around the world. The original voyage was planned for 2 years, but ended up lasting 5 years. Most of the journey was spent in South America, where Darwin made most of his observations on plants, animals, and geology. Darwin, who was 22 years old at the beginning og the voyage would later call the event "the most important event of my life."
  • Begin of Darwin's Voyage

    The voyage on the HMS Beagle began in Plymouth, England. He is the captains assistant and suffered from seasickness.
  • Cape Verde Island

    Darwin was amazed by his geological observations on the Island so much that he proposed writing a book on geology based on the places he traveled.
  • Salvador, Brazil

    He explores the Brazilian Rainforest for the first time, and is impressed by the biodiversity, especially among plants.
  • Crossing the Equator

    Their ship was flooded with water, and there were disagreements between the captain and Darwin on the basis of their practices.
  • Punta Alta, Argentia

    He finds a giant fossil, which he asserts is justification that animals were different and larger.
  • Tierra del Fuego, Argentina

    The captain of the ship pays back three natives, and tries to set up a Christian missionary, but fails.
  • Falkland Islands

    He observes the barren land. He notices in a primitive looking rock he cracked open fossils.
  • Rio Negro, Argentina

    Darwin explored the fertile lowlands called the Pampas with the local people called the gauchos.
  • Chloe Island, Chile

    He sees Mount Osorma erupt and experiences an earthquake, which causes a change in the sea-levels. The aftermath of the earthquake greatly affected him.
  • Galapagos Islands

    He finds organisms unique to the island, but notices their relation to the mainland animals. He is fascinated with the Galapagos tortoises. He noticed the the marine Iguana, which unlike any other swan and feed in the ocean. He finds seaweed in their stomach. He found that many animals blended into the environment. He finds multiple types of finches, and latter realizes they had attributes that best fit their environments.
  • Sydney, Australia

    He wonders why there are different types of animals in Australia, and is fascinated with marsupials and why there are certain types of animals in Australia .
  • Cocos Island

    He studies coral reefs growing around the island.
  • Mauritius

    Darwin walked along the seacoast. He observes that there is black lava over grass and bushes.
  • Cape Town

    Darwin was impressed by the number of bullock wagons and the Table Mountain with it being 3,500 ft and made of sandstone.
  • South America

    He discovers incredible animals, but becomes seasick and homesick with the additional detours.
  • The End in Falmouth, England

    He finally reached home. The ship he took on the journey, The Beagle was small and had tight living quarters.
