    By March, the movement was able to capture the entire Sierra Maestra, and U.S.-Cuban relations changed drastically. On the 14th of that same month, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower imposed an arms embargo on the island, and without having American parts for repairs, the Cuban air force started to break down.

    On July 26, Fidel Castro united a rebel force with systematized plans to overthrow the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. He led 160 guerrilla fighter for sieging the Moncada Military Barracks at Santiago, many of the rebels were killed and Castro was arrested.
