  • The Beginning of the Dada Art Movement

    The Dada movement was an artistic and literary movement that was created as a reaction to World War One, and the nationalism that many thought had led to the war. Influenced by other avant-garde movements, Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism, and Expressionism, the output was wildly ranging from performance art to poetry, photography, sculpture, painting and collage. Dada's aesthetic marked by its mockery of materialistic and nationalistic attitudes .
  • Woman Given the Vote (Aged 30+)

    The majority of the men in households were leaving for World War One which therefore the women were left alone to take up the roles that the men left behind in 1918. This lead to the UK government agreeing to allow woman to vote but only if they was aged 30 or above.
  • Metropolis

    Metropolis is a sci-fi drama which features a robot called 'maria' which looks like a human. The whole film idea was created throughout World War One. The first World War started in 1914 and ended in 1918, and Metropolis was released in 1927, nine years after the first World War. This explains that the film idea was inspired by the different events that were happening throughout the World War.
  • Women Allowed to Vote (Aged 21+)

    Around 10 years after the first agreement to allow women to vote, the UK now lowered the age that women could vote, to the age of 21 or above. Other countries also changed their voting laws for women, such as in 1919 USA changed theirs to woman 21 and over can vote and France also changed theirs a little later in 1944.
  • Un Chien Andalou

    This is a fantasy and horror short film made shortly after World War One. This film is an example of a surrealist that contains a narrative that does not connect or make sense. You are able to see the effects of the Dada movement and the surrealism as an actor gets her eye cut open, which is extremely graphic. The disturbing visuals make you want to continue watching to find out why.
  • The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir

    The Second Sex is a book written by Simone de Beauvoir that deals with the treatment of women throughout history and is thought as a major work of feminist philosophy and is the starting point of second-wave of feminism. It is one of the earliest attempts to confront human history from a feminist perspective.
  • The Terminator

    The Terminator is an action film and sci-fi film which has a humanoid cyborg that is sent to assassinate someone. This film was released around the same time as the cyborg film genre was growing and in general the film was a huge success, and is considered one of the best cyborg films of all time.
  • Robocop

    Robocop is an action, crime and sci-fi film which was created in the late 1980's. The plot is you are following an injured cop that returns as a powerful cyborg (Robocop).
  • Bikini Kill

    Bikini Kill was an American rock band created in Washington and is considered to be the pioneer of the 'Riot Grrrl movement'. The Riot Grrrl movement combines feminism with a punk style with politics and that is demonstrated by Bikini Kill, they were well known for their radical feminist lyrics and fiery performances. The development of feminism became stronger expanding from books into different mediums like music.
