    The USSR successfully tested their first nuclear bomb, named "First Lightning". The explosion was similar to the United States first bomb "Trinity". On September 3rd an American Spy plane found the first evidence of the radiation caused by testing of the bomb.

    The creation of the USSR's nuke is very significant in terms of the arms race going on between the two countries. The USSR paid former scientist like Klaus Fuchs and the Rosenberg family. The Soviet Union had no chance against the US in a bombing war, until they mastered the use of the atomic bomb.     The Korean War started when North Korea sent 75,000 soldiers across the 38th parallel. Shortly after the US sent troops to South Korea to help fight off the communists from the North. After a back and forth battle for three years the war was considered a stalemate because the counties were back at being divided at the 38th parallel.

    The war was a major symbol how the United States were willing to fight to stop the disease of communism. The domino theory predicted that if one country fell to communism the surrounding countries would follow. The proxy was viewed as a fight between good and evil from the east and west. Although the Soviet Union did not enter the war officially, it helped aid North Korea and China in the fight against the US and South Korea.

    The Soviet Union successfully launched the first artificial satellite named “Sputnik” into space in 1957. Sputnik, only the size of a volleyball, was impressive to the world because of how it could fit all the technology into something so small. The satellite was created to map the surface of Earth; at the time was a huge scientific achievement.

The fact that the Soviet Union could send a satellite into orbit scared Americas. If they could achieve that they could send missiles to our home front.     Bay of Pigs Invasion
    In 1959, Fidel Castro led an army and overthrew the Cuban government. As soon as Castro took over the CIA and U.S. State Department plotted to push him from power. Finally on April 16th 1961 the CIA launched a full-scale attack to overtake Castro’s government. The CIA sent 1,400 trained Cuban refugees to fight. The invasion did not go well and the CIA trained troops were surrounded and surrendered in less than 24 hours.

    The Bay of Pigs Invasion was a set up by John F. Kennedy and the CIA. The United States attempted to force a counter-revolution and stop the spread of communism. It scared the American population to have a communist threat so close to the southern Florida. The failed attempt strengthened the position of Castro in Cuba and allowed them to strengthen their relations with the Soviet Union.

    Berlin Wall Goes Up
    The Berlin Wall went up on August 13th, 1961 and was a symbol of the Iron Curtain and the Cold War as a whole. The Soviet Union put up the wall to keep out western influences and their “fascist” ideas. Briatin and the US sent air drops to help aid the people of east Berlin. The wall divided the city in the middle and separated friends and family for years.

    After WWII, Germany was split up into 4 different sections, one for each of the Allied Powers. The soviets, controling east Germany/Berlin built a brick wall with barbed wire originally but built onto it as time passed. The wall was looked at by the world as being sneaking. The term “The Iron Curtain” was created representing how the USSR shut its doors on the rest of the world and acted in secrecy.

    July 20th 1969 was the day the first man stepped foot on the moon. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins were all part of the Apollo Mission. Neil, the first one to step onto the surface of the moon, was a symbol of how far we’ve come in the space race from when it started in 1957.

    Part of the Cold War was to over achieve each the other country, whether it came to dangerous weapons,sports, or scientific achievements the US wanted to beat the Soviets. After the USSR sent Sputnik into space, it was a battle between them and the US to see who could over accomplish the other. This accomplishment, which was put in motion by President John F. Kennedy, overtook the Soviet space program. After putting a man on the moon, it showed the dominance of democracy over communism.

    The Miracle on Ice is what the American public called the Olympic Hockey Game against the Soviet Union in 1980. The Soviet Union won 6 of the past 7 Olympic games and the United States team was again the Under Dog. Herb Books and his Olympic Hockey team won 4 to 3 in Lake Placid, New York, scoring two goals in the last period.

    Like other examples during the Cold War the Soviet Union and United States battled for the upper hand in something. Other examples included the space race, other sports, and an arms race. The game symbolized the heart of America and how it can overcome anything. Although the Soviets had incredible success in the past seven Olympic games when it came to hockey, the Americans stood strong and won the gold for their country.

    On December 26th 1991, representatives from 11 soviet republics met in Alma-Ata and agreed to no longer be a part of the Soviet Union. This was due to the Soviet’s president Mikhail Gorbachev’s less strict rules which allowed the country to see how much better capitalism was than communism.
