  • United Nations

    United Nations
    On April 25, 1945, 50 different nations met in San Francisco, California to create this new peace making body.
  • United Nations Est.

    United Nations Est.
    2 months after being founded, the United Nations was established. Supposed to be used to create peace between the nations, it quickly began being an arena in which the superpowers competed. The Soviet Union and The United States used to UN to spread influence to others.
  • The Potsdam Conference

    The Potsdam Conference
    The 3 leaders, Joeseph Stalin, Winston Churchill (later replcaed by Prime minister Clement Attlee) and United states President Harry Truman met in Potsdam, Germany to negotiate the ending of ww2. The conference kept going until August 2nd. During this, Stalin promised free voting, on secret ballots, (as used today) at the end of the war. It was clear Stalin would be unfaithful to his promise. The soviets prevented free elections and banned democratic parties.
  • The Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine
    The Truman Doctrine was established when Britain asked America to take over aiding Greece and Turkey. President Truman excepted the challenge. Congress agreed that the doctrine was neccesary in or to keep the Soviet influence from spreading. Between 1947 and 1950 the US sent $400 million to Turkey and Greece greatly reducing the spread of communism.
  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan was used to provide aid to all European nations that needed it. This doctrine states "..not against any country or doctrine but against hunger, poverty, desperation, and chaos." Over 4 years, the US lent a 16 countries a total of $13 billion in aid. Leading to the communist party losing a majority of votes.
  • The Berlin Airlift

    The Berlin Airlift
    The American and British started the Berlin Airlift to fly food and supplies to West Berlin. For almost a year, many planes took off and landed every few minutes gathering and delivering goods. West Berlin survived because of the Airlift. After the airlift, the Soviet had realized they were defeated and lifted the blockade.
  • The NATO Alliance

    The NATO Alliance
    The NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION was created to form a military defense. Berlin blockade increased the fear of the Soviet agression. 10 western european countries joined the US and Canada On April 4 1949 to form NATO. Nato was made up of 12 members, all of which pledged military support if anyone was attacked. NATO Has kept a standing force of over 500,000 members.
