    6 million African-Americans had moved North for the pursuit of jobs and escape racial prejudice. This event is important because it helped grow and industrialize Northern cities, however blacks were still treated as unequal.

  • George Keenan's "Long Telegram"

    George Keenan's "Long Telegram"
    State department recieved a telegram from George Keenan. Called on Truman to "contain communism". This event is important is because it started this anti-communist revolution.
  • Greece Civil War

    Basically the first combat war of the civil war, the communist Greeks fought against the democratic Greeks.
  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman gave a radio speech asking Congress for money to provide assistance to halt the spread of communism in Eastern Europe. It's important because it at least slowed down the spread of communism in Eastern Europe.

    The Marshall Plan was a 13 billion dollar plan to reconstruct the European economy, to take power from Communist groups. This event is important because it stopped the spread of communism.

    Western Allies were blocked of any contact with Berlin by the Soviet Union. This event is important because it helped the spread of communistic ideology.

    North Korea invaded South Korea becuase of conflicts over the border. This event is important because it enforced the 38th parallel.

    Candidate Eisenhower won the 1952 presidential election in a landslide against Democratic nominee Adlai Stevenson. This event is important because it was the first presidential election that used political TV ads.
  • Hurricane Hazel

    Hurricane Hazel
    A devasting hurricane hit the Carribean, the Carolinas, Virginia, & Toronto. This event is important because national disater organizations were created.
  • National Interstate System Act

    National Interstate System Act
    Created a network of interstate highways and it was funded by mostly gasoline taxes. This event is important because families started to travel and travel times were significantly reduced.
  • Space Race

    In 1957, the Soviets launched the first communist satellite Sputnik, into the atmosphere. This event is important because it led to the Americans quickly putting someone in space soon after the Soviets did.

    The U.S. had been favorites to win many track events but were upset. The U.S. hated losing the medal count to the Soviets. Both president Eisenhower and president JFK were both comitted to improving the physical fitness of our nation.
