    Iron Curtain
    "Iron Curtain" was a term used to describe the boundary that separated the Warsaw Pact countries from the NATO countries from about 1945 until the end of the Cold War in 1991. The boundary separated lots of countries which made it seem that there were two different sides just furthering the Cold War. Religious Gaspire because due to the spread of communism on one side of the curtain most of that sides region led to more and more atheists and the loss of believing in religions like Christianity.
  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    Roots of the Cold War conflict begin with the Yalta Conference where Allied leaders FDR, Churchill & Stalin, also known as the “Big Three” agree to govern Germany jointly after the war. In a way the conference had foreshadowed the future country rivalry between the U.S and Russia due to the tension and despise building up when the countries were dividing areas of Poland showing signs for war. Political Gaspire theme due to the the amount of WW2 talk about what should happen to most countries.
  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine
    Greece and Turkey were in danger of falling to communist insurgents so Truman requested $400 million from Congress to aid both countries stopping the communist spread. The possibility and spread with communism that threaten the American way of life was so bad that the U.S. had to interfere causing more conflict fueling the war. Economic Gaspire theme because of how the U.S used the economic difficulties countries were going through as excuse to give them money.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    A plan created by U.S. Sec of State George Marshall it was designed to rebuild Europe from the destruction caused by WWII. Nearly $13 billion in U.S. aid was sent to Europe but The Soviet Union and communist Eastern Europe decline U.S. aid, citing "dollar enslavement." Was another attempt to stop communist spread in Europe but only created more distress with Russia forcing countries to decline. Economic Gaspire theme because the U.S tried to bribe foreign countries using the excuse as "help."
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    Soviets attempt to create a blockaded to on sector that belonged to the allies so from June 1948 to May 1949, U.S. and British planes airlift 1.5 million tons of supplies to the residents of West Berlin. After 200,000 flights, the Soviet Union lifts the blockade. This was a way for Soviets to eliminate western powers and spread communism across Berlin due to it's importance in Poland.Geographic Gaspire theme due to barricading of western forces for going in Berlin.
  • Nato

    Nato
    Stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The USA formed military alliance with Canada, Brit, Fr, & 8 others in West to pledge to protect and support one another if ever attacked. Nato was away for the U.S to show they had allies and if they had to fight they wouldn't fight alone, making it seem like the world was divided, and having people join in further fueling the war. Social Gaspire theme because the NATO was an alliance of western powers that came together as a group.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    Communist China and the USSR gave aid, military support and weapons to support the North, while the U.S did the same with the South. NATO forces led pushed the North Koreans up to the Chinese borders The war ended with the nation split into North and South Korea at the 38th parallel like before the conflict. Communism did not spread meaning the U.S;s efforts were a success. Cultural Gaspire theme due to the similar beliefs of North and South Korea meaning turning South into a communist country.
  • Warsaw Pact

    Warsaw Pact
    The Soviet Union led this military alliance & had forced 7 Eastern European “satellites” to join, who were pressured by fear into joining. Any attempt to leave the pact would be seen as disloyal. The pact was created in response of the NATO to show Soviets were still superior in every way, and allowed the Soviets to become more intimidating to lesser countries this madencommunism to spread further. Social Gaspire theme because the pact was an alliance even if mainly controlled by the Soviets.
  • Vietnam War

    South Vietnam was an allie of the US and North Vietnam was an allie of the USSR. The US feared if North Vietnam won the war other countries in South Asia would also fall to Communism. Like Korea the U.S thought the best way to take care of a "disease" was to stop it before it was able to spread, which really is what fueled the Vietnam & Cold War. Culture Gaspire theme because same a Korea, South Vietnam could be easily persuaded by the North because of the similar shared culture and lifestyle.
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    Cuban Missle Crisis
    Summer 1962, the Soviet Union sent nuclear missiles into Cuba. The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. The Soviet field commanders in Cuba were prepared to use battlefield nuclear weapons to defend the island if it was invaded. Luckily, thanks to, President John F. Kennedy and Premier Nikita Khrushchev, nuclear war was avoided.
  • The Space Race

    The Space Race
    The US and USSR competed for who was the most technologically advanced. Russia's Yuri Gagarin was the 1st man in space on April 12, 1961. But the race didn't end there JFK promised to put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960’s and he was successful. The US sent the 1st man to the moon in 1969! This competition allowed each country to try and better themselves at all times. Intelligence Gaspire theme because of the leaps in technology during this period due to the competition.
  • Détente

    Détente
    Detente eased of political tensions between the U.S and Russia.During this time both Nixon (U.S.) & Brezhnev (Soviet) met to talks about their 2 countries. They agreed to SALT that decreased the nuclear weapons that could be used. They did this because with the amount of fire power that they had against each other it was enough to kill EVERYBODY. Intelligence Gaspire theme because even though their were problems between the countries they looked at the bigger picture and came up with a solution.
  • Perestrokia

    Perestrokia
    A political movement for Economic Restructuring in Soviet Russia. It incorporated elements of capitalism like private ownership, & let businesses keep profits. It was designed to increase worker incentive & boost the Soviet Economy. It gave the people a taste freedom & led to fall of communism & end of the Cold War. Psychological Gaspire theme because giving people a better reward for harder work made people want to work harder for a reason, instead of doing more work but getting nothing extra.
  • Glasnost

    Glasnost
    An “Openness” new policy allowing people in the Soviet Union to openly criticize the government. It relaxed on Russian censorship. It was a movement to attempt to solve the problems of the Soviet Union. This also allowed other countries to see the USSR as a more lenient country. Artistic Gaspire theme was committed due to people being able to express themselves better forms of art that weren't allowed before probably about things didn't agree with communism weren't as cut down on.
  • Belrin Wall

    Belrin Wall
    The wall was built by the East Berlin government to stop people from going to West Berlin which was still controlled by western democracies despite being located inside Soviet controlled East Germany. The Berlin Wall getting torn down signified the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, the U.S had finally achieved their goal of stopping the spread of Communism. Geographic Gaspire theme because due to the way Berlin was spread the wall should've been geographical advantage for the Soviets.
  • Al-Qaeda

    The reason for our current conflicts for example like 9/11 with Islamic terrorist groups like Al-Quida is a result of our efforts at funding and creating such groups ln Pakistan from the CIA to indirectly combat the USSR in Afghanistan during the Cold War.
  • North Korea

    In current times North Korea has became what it has been today due to the Cold War. Soviet Russia had supplied North Korea similar to the U.S and Afghanistan. It allowed North Korea to become a lot more powerful and be the dominant Korea allowing it to become a dictatorship.
