Formation of The Eastern Bloc
The Eastern Bloc was a group of countries all over the world that were communist. But also allied with the Soviet Union during the Cold War Era. These countries in the Eastern Bloc were also associated sometime with the Soviets version of Nato which was the Warsaw Pact. -
Greek Civil War
The Greek war was fought between the the communist parties in Greece and the British armies. The British armies were able to suppress the communists. An take complete control of Greece and give the thrown back to the King. But then the communist had a uprising again and Britain didn't have the resource's to defend it anymore and gave it to the U.S which was able to suppress the communists again. This time the rest of the communists ended up fleeing to near by Albania. -
Enactment of The Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was signed by Truman. This bill was set up so the U.S could give financial aid to those countries in Europe to help them rebuild there country. But also set it up so democratic governments could be able survive and help run the government. -
Berlin Blockade and Airlift
Stalin didn't like that West Berlin was being rebuilt so fast and this was causing the East Berliners to start feiling east berlin. So stalin cut off all trade routes from road and by river between West Berlin and West Germany. The U.S, France, and Britain by passed the blockade by flying materials in by air. To the point that Stalin excepted defeat and stopped his blockade. -
Postwar Occupation and Division of Germany
Germany was divided among the Soviet and the Three major allied powers. The same was done for Berlin as well it was divided among the Soviet and the three major allied powers. The allies controlled two thirds of germany and berlin when the Soviet only controlled a third. -
Korea War
The Korean war started when North Korea Invaded South Korea. This caused the U.S to get involved and help the South Koreans fight back. The South Koreans made progress and started pushing the North Koreans far into there own territory. China in fear of being invade helped back the North Koreans and pushed the South Koreans back to the 38th parallel. A cease far soon was signed shortly there after. -
Cuban Revolution
The Cuban Revolution started after many Cubans were unhappy with the racial inequality, corruption and lack of justice by the Batiste regime. So Castro set up a new for of government and began to start fighting against them. This caused them to get and upper hand on Cuban and the overthrowing of the old government. An causing the Batiste regime to flee the island. -
Overthrowing of the Guatemalan Government
The overthrowing of the Guatemalan government was largely supported by the Americans. The one reason they wanted to overthrow the government was to protect the profits of the United Fruit Company. The way they did this was by setting up coup supported by the U.S backed up authorities rulers. -
Vietnam War
The war started when the communist force in the north had won the battle of Dien Bien Phu. THis win caused both the United States to join and help the south. This caused the Soviets to join the north. With anti war protest beginning in the U.S. They made peace agreement with North Vietnam to pull out of the war. In April North Vietnam gained complete control of Vietnam. -
Hungarian Uprising
The Hungarian Uprising was a country wide effort to revolt against the government of the Hungarian Peoples republic. But also there policies that they put in place because of there subordination to the Soviet Union. The secret police ended up opening fir on the crowd to deter them. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
The Bay of Pigs Invasion was an attempt by the CIA to remove Castro from power to help stop the spread of communism. This plan went into action but ended up being a major failure. The reason it failed was because Cuban planes strafed the invaders and sank two escort ships and half of the air support. -
Building the Berlin Wall
The Berlin wall was constructed to prevent the residents of communist East Berlin. From fleeing into the democratic West Berlin. So on the night of August 13 1961 east German soldiers laid down more the 30 miles of barbed wire. Through the heart of Berlin. They over time the barbed wire was removed and a wall was constructed to take its place. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis started because the United States had missiles in turkey and the Soviets didn't like that so they decided to put missiles in Cuba. The U.S saw this happen so they set up a blockade around Cuba to prevent anymore missiles from coming in. But Khrushchev decided to remove the Soviet missiles from Cuba. so in return the U.S removed there old outdated missiles from Turkey. -
Prague Spring
It was an attempt by the Dubcek to give the people of Czechoslovakia more freedom and rights. They planned to do this by decentralization and democratization. This was suppose to unrestricted the media and loosen the restrictions on the people. But this all ended when in August the USSR invaded the country. -
Soviet War in Afghanistan
The Soviets wanted to prop up the countries communist government in its battle against the anticommunist Muslim guerrillas The KGB also poisoned the Afghan president and its prime minster. The Soviets air invaded almost all of Afghanistan major cities which sparked a nine year bloody war. -
Tiananmen Square Massacre
A group of students in Beijing were holding a protest to protest against the Chinese repressive government. This cause the People Liberation Army to crack down on the protesters. This rise in aggression from the army led to a unknown number of student protesters to end up being killed in the protest. -
Fall of the Berlin Wall
The berlin wall was a wall the divided East and West Germany. Five days before the fall of the wall. There was a mass protest of about half a million people gathered in eat Berlin. Then there was a misinformed public announcement which caused the people to start tearing the wall down. -
Fall of the Soviet Union
In August 1991 a coup of hardline communists and the military tried to overthrow Gorbachev and to end the progress of the failing reforms. But the central government in Moscow was losing influence. Ultimately allowing many republics to gain power and declare independence. -
9/11 Attacks
The 9/11attack was caused when 19 terrorist from Al-Qaeda hijacked 4 commercial planes. The one plane hit the South Tower. When another plane hit the North Tower. Later that day both towers collapsed. The third plane crashed into the pentagon. An the 4th plane was crashed into a farm field when the brave people on the plane fought back against the terrorist. It is said that the forth plane was heading to crash into the White House.
