    On Clara's 1st day of school at age 4 she could spell artichoke, She was placed in advanced reading class by her teacher, Colonel Richard Stone.
  • Goes to Boarding School

    At 8 she went off to boarding school which was taught by Colonel Stone.
  • 2) 1st Job as a Teacher

    At 18 dressed to look older as she began teaching.
  • Started new school

    Said she'd teach for free for 3 months if they would give her a place to teach children with no school in Clinton, New Jersey. Her public school grew from 6 to 600 students.
  • 3) Washington DC

    She left New Jersey since they were paying her less than men teachers, and went to work in the US patent office earning the same $1400/year as men.
  • Lincoln becomes President

    Clara lost her job until Republican President Abe Lincoln was elected when she made friends with Sen. Wilson she had the support to help more people.
  • 4) Nurses Injured Massachusetts soldiers after Riot in Baltimore.

    She helped some former students who were attacked on a train bound for Baltimore and within 6 months filled 3 warehouses with supplies for the troops.
  • Battle of Cedar Mountain and Civil War

    Clara got permits to bring aid to troops on battlefield. Was called angel of the battlefield for her help. Continued to server on major battle throughout the civil war
  • Women Suffrage

    Met Susan B Anthony and worked for women's right to vote.
  • Franco Prussian War with International Red Cross

    Went overseas and served as a nurse becoming 1st American woman to receive German Iron Cross. Began working with international Red Cross.
  • President of American Red Cross

    Servered as Disaster relief for many years
  • 5) Started American Red Cross

    Returned after 4 years abroad and started Red Cross in the US.
  • Awarded International Fame for Red Cross Career

    She received Russia's Silver Cross for her service life.
  • 6) Retired after 23 years

    She served at age 77 during the Cuban war effort in 1898. She retired at age 83 in 1904.
  • 7) Died at age of 90
