Clara's First Nursing Experience
When Clara was 11 she received her first patient. Her brother received an injury from a farm accident and needed medical care. Clara applied and gave him his medication. 1833-1835 -
Clara Started Teaching
At the age of 18, Clara went to work as a teacher and excelled at it. With that love of teaching she established her own free public school. The school turned out to be a major success. -
Clara Started Working at the Patent Office
Clara decided to stop teaching and start a career at the U.S patent office. Clara was treated as fair as the men and received equal payment from her boss. This job also moved her closer to D.C and closer to the action of the Civil War. -
Clara Helped Wounded Soldiers
Clara helped wounded soldiers who arrived on a train after a big battle. Clara tended to them and helped them recover with supplies she collected from the community. This was her first experience helping in the Civil War. -
Clara Starts Working on the Battlefields
Clara gained permission to help on the battlefields to help the wounded. Clara got to work for days on end. Clara worked very hard and worked herself to exhaustion. -
Clara Wants to Keep Helping
Clara wanted to continue serving those who needed her. She then found a job at the Missing Soldiers Office. Clara and her staff were able to locate 22,000+ men. -
Taking a Little Break
Clara was very exhausted and doctors recommended that she should take time off and go to Europe. Instead of taking time off, Clara met representatives of the International Red Cross. She then wanted to found the American Red Cross. 1868-1869 -
Founding the American Red Cross
Once Clara came back to America, she worked hard to found the American Red Cross. She traveled around America and even other countries to help others. She made a big impact on others through her endless effort to help. -
The American Red Cross Spreads
The Red Cross spread and began to cover many disasters. She helped out in Armenia and Cuba. She was extremely willing to help others. 1880's -
Publishing Books
Clara publishes a book on the Red Cross in 1904 spreading awareness. Then in 1907 she published another book about her childhood and life. In all, she was a very hardworking woman.
