    At the age of 18, Clara went to work as a teacher and excelled at it. With that love of teaching she established her own free public school. The school turned out to be a major success.

    Clara decided to stop teaching and start a career at the U.S patent office. Clara was treated as fair as the men and received equal payment from her boss. This job also moved her closer to D.C and closer to the action of the Civil War.

    Clara Helped Wounded Soldiers
    Clara helped wounded soldiers who arrived on a train after a big battle. Clara tended to them and helped them recover with supplies she collected from the community. This was her first experience helping in the Civil War.

    Clara publishes a book on the Red Cross in 1904 spreading awareness. Then in 1907 she published another book about her childhood and life. In all, she was a very hardworking woman.
