    Election of Lincon
    The 1860 presidential election pitted four candidates against each other: Stephen Douglas for the Northern Democrats, John C. Breckenridge for the Southern Democrats, John Bell for the Constitutional Union Party, and Abraham Lincoln for the Republican Party. Lincon won and the Democrats were outraged. Lincon was then put into many positions of to attack or not. His first attempt to preserve the union was to appeal to the southern states. But the southern states seceded anyways.
  • TX Secedes From Union

    TX Secedes From Union
    Texas seceded from the union after a state convention vote of 166-8. Since Texas was now part of the South, the major supply ports in Texas were no longer available to the Union. The Confederacy set up blockades to prevent Union Boats from approaching Texas. Texas did not secede alone. Six other states seceded with Texas.
  • Houston Kicked Out of Office

    Houston Kicked Out of Office
    When Houston would not side with the Confederacy, he was kicked out of office and replaced. Texas then took action against the Union. Texas had already seceded and was beginning to act independently. Sam Houston retired to his home in East Texas.

    The Battle of Fort Sumter was the surrender of Fort Sumter, near Charleston, South Carolina, that started the American Civil War. Seven Southern states seceded.South Carolina demanded that the US Army abandon its facilities in Charleston Harbor.

    The Union beat Confederate forces in a battle near the town of Gettysberg, Pennsylvania. This was the battle with the most casualties during the entire civil war. This battle was fought because the Confederacy wanted to destroy the Union. This battle was considered the turning point in the American Civil War.
  • Battle of Sabine Pass

    Battle of Sabine Pass
    A Union flotilla of four gunboats and seven troop transports steamed into Sabine Pass with the intention of reducing Fort Griffin and landing troops to begin occupying Texas. When the gunboats got to Fort Griffin, six cannons shot at them. This battle stopped further efforts by the union to take over Texas.

    Red River Campaign

    This was a series of battles along the Red River. It was a plan to surround the main Confederate armies by using Banks's Army of the Gulf to capture Mobile, Alabama. It was a Union failure. This led to a rivalry between General Richard Taylor and Kirby Smith
