Civil War Events

  • Siege of Fort Sumter 1861

    Event: The Confederates succeeded from the Union and their was a Fort on "Confederate" land the the rebels wanted.
    Cause: The Confederates wanted a fort on their land so they tried to fight and get it. When the rebels tried to get the fort the general their wouldn't give it up, which lead to a siege.
    Effect: Lincoln had to send troops to defend the fort, which officially began the war. The Confederates came out on top, which gave them a lot of confidence for winning one of the first conflicts.
  • The Battle of Bull Run/Manassas 1861

    Event: The Battle of Bull Run was the first battle in the Civil War. In the begging the Union pushed back the Confederates. By the end of the battle the Confederates made the Union retreat.
    Cause: The Civil War just began and both sides felt that they needed to make a move. Luckily, for both sides they ran into each other.
    Effect: The effect of the Battle of Bull Run is both sides realize this will be a long war. The Union also realized it would harder than anticipated.
  • Battle of Antietam 1862

    Event: The battle of Antietam was the most bloody battle in American history. The Union was on one side of Antietam Creek and the Confederates on the other.
    Cause: The south attempted to attack Maryland to lower the Union's morales. Then a Union soldier found the South's war plans, and attacked at Antietam.
    Effect: This was the most bloody war ever in American History. Also, Lincoln thought that McClellan missed and opportunity to win the war, but he didn't take advantage of if.
  • Emancipation Proclamation 1863

    Event: The E.P. was a speech made by Abe Lincoln that allowed all slaves in the states that succeeded from the Union freed and they could enlist in the army.
    Cause: Lincoln didn't want the Confederates to have as many materials to use and sell, this meant they couldn't buy any weapons because they had no money.
    Effect: This got Britain on the Union side because they liked the idea that the Union was also fighting to end slavery, also the rebels had less materials.
  • Battle of Gettysburg 1863

    Event: The Battle of Gettysburg was a 3 day battle won by the Union. This was one of the most bloodiest battles in the war, and one of the Union's biggest wins.
    Cause: General Lee attempted to attack Pennsylvania to lower the morals of the Union, by beating them on their own land.
    Effect: The Union won and the Confederates never attacked the North again, because of how horrific this war was. Although, the Union won Lincoln was upset because the Confederates got away again.
  • General Sherman's March to the Sea 1864

    Event: General Sherman marched from Atlanta, GA to the coast of Savannah, GA, destroying everything in their way.
    Cause: Sherman marched to the sea because Lincoln declared total war, which meant involve everyone in the war, not just the soldiers. Since, total war was declared Sherman destroyed a lot of the South's materials.
    Effect: The South was left with very few materials(Railroads destroyed, crops/houses burned, no live stock), so the Rebels had to start their economy from scratch again.
  • Lee's Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse 1865

    Event: The Confederates decided to go into hiding near the end of the war, to hopefully stop the fighting, and regroup.
    Cause: The Confederates we losing a lot of men very, quickly so they wanted to regroup. So the went to Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia.
    Effect: They were eventually found by the Union and we forced to give up their weapons, except for the generals, and were ordered to go back to their everyday life, because they were part of the USA again.
