It resolved the divisions of slavery in new territories. It also was an attempt to make a compromise between the North and South. -
Bleeding Kansas
Pro-slavery and free-state settlers flooded into the new territory in attempt to influence the slavery institution within the state. It describes the period of violence that occurred during the settlement of the Kansas territory. -
The Kansas Nebraska Act
This was an act passed that allowed the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to vote on their own decision of whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. -
The Dred Scott Decision
The supreme court ruled that a slave was not entitled to freedom and that African-Americans could never become a US citizen. It also stated that the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional. -
Lincoln-Douglas Debates
A series of seven debates between Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln and the democratic nominee Stephen Douglas. The debates took place during the senatorial campaign and consisted of the issues of slavery and the extension into new territory. -
Harper’s Ferry
A planned assault of armed abolitionists led by John Brown in West Virginia. The raid was the first stage of an elaborate plan to establish an independent group of freed slaves in the mountains of Maryland and Virginia. This event increased the tension between the North and South. -
Lincoln’s Elections
The presidential election was held on November 6, 1860. There was an immediate outbreak of the civil war after this election. -
Fort Sumter
Confederate artillery opened fire on fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor after decades of tension between the North and South. -
Bull Run
The union and confederate armies clashed in Virginia. This was the first major land battle of the Civil War. -
Antietam
It was a face off between Robert E Lee and George Mcclellan. This was the first battle of the civil war that was fought on northern soil. -
Emancipation Proclamation
This was a proclamation declaring that all slaves in rebellious states would be free. This was important because it was a turning point where they started fighting for freedom instead of for preserving the nation. -
Gettysburg and Gettysburg Address
Abraham Lincoln made a speech on one of the bloodiest battle sites of the war. He talked about human rights and equality. This would become the most important speech in American history. -
Andersonville Prison
It was the largest prison for union soldiers in the south. 13,000 prisoners disappeared in the prison, and there were very harsh conditions. -
Reconstruction
The south had to be rebuilt. There was also a presidential reconstruction during this time that took union land and gave it to freed slaves. -
Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
The confederate leader Robert E Lee surrendered to Grant at the courthouse. This was the end of the war. -
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
John Wilkes Booth a confederate sympathizer shot Lincoln at a theatre in Washington DC. He was the first president to ever be assassinated.
